Well, some of you may remember my post about our beloved dog Chloe dying in September. We thought we would wait until after the first of the year to get a new one, but it became clear that we needed a dog now.
So my wife felt that another dachshund was the ticket, but this time a miniature. She found one available and we ended up getting it - a female miniature red long-haired dachshund. When we went to pick it up we noticed it playing with a litter mate but we wanted only one dog, so we took the red and made the hour-and-a-half drive home. The dog, Penny, was fine but was lonely the first night and whined until my wife slept with it on the couch.
While we were at the breeder (yes, the breeder) I had the thought that we could probably handle two dogs, but ... anyway we decided to get the litter mate, which excited my 20-year-old daughter to tears. So my daughter and I drove up the next day to get the little brother Rocky, a male miniature dapple smooth dachshund. On the way home, Rocky pooped on my daughter twice. We stopped and cleaned it up and I comforted my daughter with, "Hey, it's a story." She was fine.
Anyway, these dogs are in hog heaven (so are we). They're only 11 weeks old but already are learning commands and are well on the way to being house trained. They follow us around everywhere, and we have to walk with a shuffle to avoid crushing them - the male is heaviest at about 5½ pounds. They're pretty danged small but they'll get up to about double their size - 11 pounds max.
Having them has really taken the edge off losing our dog of 12 years. They're already part of the family and I have no regrets over getting both of them.
Here are a couple quick cell-phone shots of them. I'll take some portraits in a week or so.

I don't know about the minis but the regular dachshunds bark at every thing no matter how big they also have a good hunting sense so keep an eye for dead rats and birds
