Another great craigslist add

Let me guess - the three gigs are some combination of backyard parties, birthday parties, family reunions, high school reunions, etc.

Nothing in this ad tells me that these guys are close to being legitimate-gig-ready. Cover bands put partial playlists - or at least band names - in their ads.

I saw this too. I get where he's coming from, sorta. But the killer for me is "Please don't ask for a Set List, but feel free to provide song examples of what you play and/or sing well." rubs me wrong. I won't show you mine, until you show me yours. Willing to take wannabe singers? Really? He wants an exclusive lock on the bass player? Sounds like a garage band in the making.

Rock/Party cover band seeking BASS player

3 paying gigs already lined up, plan is to be gigging till the end of time. 2-3 per month.
This is a GREAT opportunity for the right person, please carefully consider if that person might be YOU.
Must be able/willing to rehearse at least 1x/wk, approx 3/4 hours. No "hired guns" - if you're already in another band that takes up a lot of your weekend time, please do not reply to this ad. And, the usual - NO egos, drama, bs, or drugs/drinking (well, a little drinkin' is ok). Reliable equipment, reliable transportation, and a real nice guy (like all of us). Must be willing to have Fun, make a little money, and be successful... 'cause all 3 of those are guaranteed !!!!

If you're looking for a GREAT opportunity, reply. If you're looking to waste my time & yours, don't.
If you've always wanted to be in a band, playing out, but haven't... then we especially want to consider you 'n give you this shot. If you sing in the shower, or in the car, or in line at the DMV, 'n think you're pretty good... c'mon, reply.
Please provide ALL of these, please, ALL 6:

- Name (first only is ok, last too would be great)
- Town you live in (preferrably in Fairfield or New Haven counties in CT)
- Age (preferrably 35 - 55)
- Experience (if any, not neccesarily required)
- Singing ability (if any, not neccesarily required)
- a telephone # (ALL replies will be via phone)

Any responses that DO NOT contain all 6 (ALL SIX) of these will NOT be replied to. ALL SIX.
Did I mention a great personality, a great sense of humor, a passion for music, and for life too would be good.
Please don't ask for a Set List, but feel free to provide song examples of what you play and/or sing well.
Please don't ask for the name of the band, all the info provided here is all the info that will be provided until we talk.

This is a great opportunity for the right person, please carefully consider if that person might be YOU before you reply.
Thank you.

Says they are nice guys, but sound like douche bags in the intro part of the advertisement. Not a good way to look professional. Also they want to know what you do, so if you don't list what they like, you don't get the audition. Wow, I mean I'm a metal guy (waits for the abusive chuckles to calm), but I'm also into Classic 70's-80's rock and 90's alternative rock/some 90's punk. If I only list rock songs from the 90's and they prefer 80's rock then I'm screwed, and if I mix the list up they may think I'm all over the place.

I figure the band is just a bunch of idiots who are full of themselves.

Seeing as how Craigslist is flypaper for freaks and you get all sorts of windbags crawling out from wherever they last were I can understand why they'd get somewhat sharpish in their ads. If you'd been bombarded with banality after being very specific your patience would run out too.

This craigslist ad is more of a 'minus' than an 'add'
Although, some musicians may want to add this ad contact to their list of people to contact.
I kinda get their frustration with folks replying to their ad.
But stating it makes the band sound like a bunch biatches.

This is not that bad of an ad. It's just not that good.

If I was local there, I'd reply hoping to meet and network with a couple normal possibly frustrated musicians and possibly one weirdo who writes ad's in craigslist for them.

Then again, maybe it all works out and we form a great band. Ya never know...

"Please don't ask for a set list... please don't ask for the name of the band..." (because, y'know, their AMAZING set list and GENIUS band name are the carefully guarded secrets of their success)...

but...

"Carefully consider if that person might be you before you reply..."

Since, y'know... they've given you so much useful information about the project to consider...

This was posted today, in response. Excellent!

I understand theres plenty of "window shoppers" on Craigs but what I dont get is the "dont ask for a set list" How am I suppose to know if its a band Im interested in if they wont tell me what they play ?

Meh.

They say they are a rock/party cover band. That not enough to tell you if you are interested? I mean, if you are the kind of person who WILL play the The Romantic's "that what I like about you" and Doobie Brother's "China Grove" but WON'T play Georgia Satelite's "Keep your hands to yourself" and Led Zep's "Rock and Roll"; you don't belong in a cover band anyway, you are far too choosey about the set list.

The reality is that although the guy sounds like a bit of a douche, IF I was looking for the situation they described, I would answer all six questions and see if I got a call. If I did, I'd see how the conversation went, because at that point you would either quickly find out if the guy really is a douche or just (as others have suggested) totally frustrated with the amount of flakes you have to weed through on facebook. What would be the downside to playing it this way, other than to waste a few minutes of your time? If you are even on Criag's list looking for a band, you've condemned yourself to wasteing a bunch of time already..................

If an ad interests me enough to reply, I always ask for their set list. If they don't reply with one I'll end communication right then and there. My favourite response to a request for their set list was "We only play the good stuff". Gee...thanks. Unfortunately, to some people the "good stuff" is a lot of Bon Jovi or "Theory of a Nickel Creed"... :rollno:

If I see a band's set list, however, I can get a good idea whether they know what they are doing or not. I looked into a rock/party cover band that listed on CL near here a few months back, and the whole list was ultra-simple three-chord 12-bar songs - I mean, the WHOLE list. It telegraphed immediately that this was amateurs in their basement who had no idea how to really play. Other playlists signal immediately, "These are my personal favorite songs and I don't give a **** how they'll go over."

One time I was stupid enough to waste six weeks playing with a couple of guys whose idea was to play pop-punk covers of pop tunes - as in, "we're going to cover, not Poker Face, but band X's cover of Poker Face." As though anyone would know or care that we were doing band X's version... If I'd thought through that set list beforehand, I would have known better than to waste my time. What that set list really showed was that the guys had no idea how to make a successful cover band work, even if they SAID they were all set to play popular, crowd-pleasing music.

I don't disagree, but does not change my point. If I was looking for a band, what would interest me most about this CL add would be the mention of 3 paying gigs lined up. I would respond with the 6 things the band wanted and see where it went. I would assume if they called me, in about 5 minutes I could tell if these guys were legit or not...and if so, I assume I would get a set list prepratory to an audition. I just don't see the big deal........

The whole "we have paying gigs lined up" thing doesnt impress me., Every add on craigslist has paying gigs line up or "knows the right people" I totally agree with Muttleybass. The audition goes both ways. If you act like your better then everyone out there you sure as hell better be able to back it up which isnt the case 99% of the time.
