Well, I'm back into playing after a long absence.
I've mostly been a "fart around" player since college days for many years I hadn't so much as picked up any of my basses. Recently, I got the bug back and had begun to play a bit on my Ibanez Roadstar II and my fretless Foundation. Unfortunately, my house was broken into last October and the bastids took both my basses and a cheesy little practice amp
.
Well, last week I finally got around to doing some serious looking for another bass and my main requirements were that it had to be a 5 string with active electronics....didn't really care about the brand or model if it played well. A guy I know has a pawn shop about 30 minutes away so a stopped in just to see what he might have...and it just happened to be a Peavey Millenium 5. I played around on it for about 20 minutes and liked it, so we arranged a trade for some non musical stuff that amounted to an INCREDIBLE deal for me.
Now that I've done some research on these basses, I now see that this is well liked bass and what I thought would be a sort of "interim get back into playing" bass, I actually have a REALLY nice instrument! It is in all but flawless cosmetic condition, but the action seems a bit too low as it tends to buzz on all strings unless it is plucked VERY lightly...so a proper set up will be needed.
Anyway, I have a lot of learning and re-learning to do since this is my first 5 string and I have to grow out of my hack player tendencies and learn the fretboard! I've also just stumbled on to the "floating thumb" technique which is apparently all but required for 5 string playing if one wants to keep the muting under control.
Anyway, I'm glad to be here and I hope to learn a lot!
