Another question for the vintage Fender experts

So I've had a Precision I've been playing for the last couple years. It was sold to me as a 1976. The neck is a non-original Allparts rosewood/maple replacement( circa 80s or early 90s) and i've replaced the black non-original pickguard with a tortoise reissue guard. Upon taking off the first non-original guard i realized the thumbrest holes were on the lower bout. When did Fender switch over the thumbrest position?
Also, the finish is a thick clearcoat with tons of finish checking on the first layer. It's natural btw. I've taken off the neck looking for a date in the pocket but it's worn off and non-legible. Also, what should I look for in the pickups? I think theyre original as is the bridge. Anyway, Im not too stuck up on it being vintage correct or anything-it's a great parts bass that sounds FANTASTIC. Thanks for your help y'all. I can have some pics up tomorrow.

About mid-1973 on the Precision for the finger rest change to a tugbar.

With the guard removed an early 73 would most likely have no extra big wiring channel routed between the pickup to control cavities. It may just have the old style tiny hole (tunnel) drilled from the pickup cavity to control cavity.
I say "most likey" but not always on this transition year.
