Another What If? thread

I got to thinking today about how one country or another always has to be at war or against another country. Do you think, if we ever found another planet with life on it, our whole world would unite, and instead of a battle of the countries, it would be a battle of the planets? Does that make sense to you all?:)

What do you all think?

If the other planet had better looking women, or naturally occurring beer lakes, there would be a war.

In fact, it's probably only a matter of time before some sort of argument breaks out on this thread.

I'm trying to keep this from being closed, so please no to intense arguing. I just posted it off of a thought I had today and I wanted to hear everyone's opinion.

I think some Earth countries would want to be friendly with a new world, but I think others would want to take over it for themselves. I personally believe there would be some war involved, but for the cause of stopping a power from taking over. IMHO of course.:smug:

Independence Day says it all my friend. The world comes together when faced with an interstellar invasion or threat.

Really though, I think if something of such magnitude as another planet and/or aliens is put into play, it could unite Earth (or at least a lot of people). To be able to see that there is more to it than just us and our planet, and that all of the issues we squabble over are really just that insignificant, it can put things in perspective.

Not trying to be argumentative. Merely trying to make the point that countries fight for the same reasons people fight. Fear, greed, envy. It's unlikely this will change. Countries won't start getting along any more than husbands will stop fighting with wives, fathers with sons or bass players on an internet forum.

Now, would we all unite to fight another planet? Perhaps for a while. Kind of like the left and right united after 9/11. How long did that last?

Very good point.

So long as the human psyche has an "us/them" genome or whatever ya wanna call it, no. We'll never stop until we evolve past it

What's more us/them than the threat of another species?

I would use the same reasoning to argue that the world leadership would indeed unite to conquer/repel any extra-terrestrial life we encounter.

The left and the right didn't unite after 9/11, the hijackers handed the Statists the right to do whatever they wanted, while any opposition was liked to anti-American sentiment. That's not even close to what you're suggesting.

The most powerful country on Earth would most likely be the most powerful country in interplanetary exploration. That country would most likely attempt to conquer and subjugate the other planet. Absolutely & without a doubt.

On paper, due to our recent "sensitivities", the most powerful nation would try to "reach out" to less powerful countries in space subjugation, however, I don't think that would change much of anything.

I'll be the first to start one.

;) :D
