Anthony Jackson and Acoustic Piano Trios

I simply cannot think of another bass guitarist who even comes to Anthony Jackson in acoustic piano trios. I hope someone carries on what he started. I suppose Steve Swallow and Carla Bley, were in AJ’s neighborhood, but I cannot think of anyone else.

Sorry, its been awhile and had to go break them out. I got the Japan concerts confused with the box set of Patrician' recordings called Concerts Inedits with Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, Louis Petrucciani and Lenny White and a solo disc. Also a great set!

I just LOVE Hiromi. The Trio Project with AJ and Simon Philips is my favorite of her ensemble formations. Just a powerhouse of performers. I have her Voice and Alive trio albums. I think there are two more I need to get.

Oh, I also really enjoy Michel Petrucciani as well. Shame he died so young. It seems anything that Anthony was involved in is sure to be something special, I’m going to guess that he had a high bar for collaborating with other artists.

Suntan aka In Trio has long been a favorite and constant inspiration for my trio work. With Dave Weckl.

Why Not is amazing too, not strictly a trio but... also Dave Weckl and a host of amazing players



Both of these are hard to find and were before the Columbia albums, I had these as Japanese imports that were stolen and later found them on a budget label.

I saw Hiromi back in 2017.
But Hadrien Feraud was the bassist.
He's a more than capable replacement.

Wow, I forgot about Suntan. I have that disc somewhere. I need to find it and play it! It is a great regret of my life that I never saw AJ play. He just didn't come out to Colorado that much and most of the time I was touring anyway. The curse of a musician. Getting to see great music is such a treat.

I love Hadrien Feraud, he is more of a Jaco disciple. I do love his playing though. Now that I think of it, Tony Grey played in Hiromi’s trio too. I have not listened to that group very much.

The Tony Grey stuff is excellent to, same with Mitch Cohn's playing on her earlier album. Tony Grey's solo albums are also excellent, not chop fests but tasty composing.
