The circular piece of wood covers a hole that leads back to the missing control panel area. Perhaps there was a switch or dial there. I don't have any clear photos of the bass in its original state.
Sweet! Is that the bass he used on the O' Jays "For the Love of Money"?
Got to play the Fodera Mr. Jackson is holding in NYC.
Amazing Bass, worth every penny, I Just don't have that many pennies.

Which one? The Fodera in his lap or the Carl Thompson? That Fodera was one of my favorites of his basses sound wise.
Hi everyone. I recently acquired AJ's Ken Smith bass from an Ebay sale. It's the first Smith bass he commissioned, and #3 of all his contrabasses.
millsbass5 said:I was wonderin' who copped this bass off eBAY. You gonna rebuild it? Or, leave it as is?
I am going to leave it as is, but find some simple way to rig up a jack and some knobs so I can hear how it sounds.
It is a relic of someone else's creative vision. To rebuild or restore it would reduce that "relic value", IMO.
A relic of someones creative vision....... I was thinkin' it was the result of someone being creative with their bad, bad temper.
I heard there's a mag article where A.J. states that it was the result of a "household accident". Seriously. It's in the thread I started on here when I ran across it on eBay. I'd get it fixed, quick.
Here's another Fodera Contrabass. In this thread Mr. Jackson discusses pickup placement, which could explain the appearance of this particular bass.

I remember when that was first broadcast, that's when I first started thinking about putting a P neck on my Jazz bass! JimThe career girl sounds amazing on Simon and Garfunkel's 'Concert in Central Park' live album.
