Anthony Jackson's Bass Guitars

The circular piece of wood covers a hole that leads back to the missing control panel area. Perhaps there was a switch or dial there. I don't have any clear photos of the bass in its original state.

I've seen a couple other Smith basses of a similar vintage, and they had a small rotary switch in that position...don't know what it did, possibly a pickup selector like on the Alembic Series basses?

Leo, it looks like AJ used your Smith with Al Di Meola in the Live at the Savoy performance.

yes, that's the one. Also used on the DiMeola Tour De Force tour, but not the bass heard on the CD of that name. AJ did overdubs in the studio with the Career Girl Fender.

Thanks for the lead. I see there are some youtube videos from that show; need to check them out!

I was wonderin' who copped this bass off eBAY. You gonna rebuild it? Or, leave it as is?

I am going to leave it as is, but find some simple way to rig up a jack and some knobs so I can hear how it sounds.

It is a relic of someone else's creative vision. To rebuild or restore it would reduce that "relic value", IMO.

A relic of someones creative vision....... I was thinkin' it was the result of someone being creative with their bad, bad temper.
I heard there's a mag article where A.J. states that it was the result of a "household accident". Seriously. It's in the thread I started on here when I ran across it on eBay. I'd get it fixed, quick.

AJ mentions that his 44" scale Carl Thompson was destroyed in a home accident in the Chris Jisi/BP Mag article.

I've been trying to ignore your post, as I don't think it warants a response. But, here I am...

Again, for the record, from the Chris Jisi article in Bass Player Dec 2008 - "I went back to Carl and had him build me another bass... it had no pickup... we extended the scale to 44[inches]... it was destroyed in a home accident soon after." All this is written in a brief paragraph, and clearly he's not talking about the Smith bass.

I was personally chastised by Ken Smith for spreading unattributable and possibly false info about this bass. I retracted my Facebook post about it and now offer no comment about what happened to it. Why? Because I just don't know!

Millsbass5, you seem good at dispensing some info about this bass but you haven't been able to cite sources. Commentary from the rest of us has had at least some reference to a source. Of course, if Jackson himself told you what you told us, well alright! Something tells me this isn't the case...

Finally, do send me the cash to get this thing fixed, quick. I can repay you, sometime....

I saw the damaged Smith on ebay like a year ago. It didn't even mention a celebrity as the owner!

I've been waiting for this. Thanks so much op.

There are a few solos of his on youtube that are almost like stories of their own. The clip of a recent, healthier AJ playing the "backwards" solo of "Water Ways Flow.." actually made me weep.
