Any 7+ String Slappers Out There?

i don't know how you guys slap on anything higher than a five! i have so much trouble slaping on my 6...

hey man,

it's more about muting and keeping the bass quiet when you slap than the actual making of noise -- the more strings you get the easier it is to make noise!

when I moved to 6 I was slapping on all my gigs and I was told that I had to be able to play it as well as I played a 4 or a 5 if I wanted to keep working. of course that was in the 80's...

the thing about practicing stuff that you're not comfortable with is to start slowly until the basics feel solid. then you can start to elaborate and speed up. have you checked out Alexis Sklarevski's Slap Bass Program? it's amazing!

Alexis is a monster and a great teacher. I had the great fortune of studying with him (as well as Steve Bailey, Jeff Berlin, Jim Lacefield, and Gary Willis!) at BIT many moons ago. that video rules! I'll have to check out Rocco's.

hey waytoodeep03,

spacing should never be an issue now that many cats make wide spaced basses on 5, 6, 7, and more-strung instruments. it's all a matter of what you're comfortable with as a player and how much range you'll actually use. anything you can do on a 4, you can do on a 5.

On the contrary, I can slap very well on a 4 string and only fairly well on a 5 string but sometimes get a little hindered by the instrument instead of it just being an extension of my body (like it should). I don't own a 5-string fretted, just what I've played in music shops.

I will never own a 6 or more stringed instrument. I neither have the need nor the ability to play such an instrument. I just wanted to see if anyone can. I've seen Al play a 9 stringer like crazy (finger) and it's amazing that he's able to handle that beast.

I'm in Atlantic City, playing at Harrahs. I knocked the teeth
out of this bass yesterday! I think if you practiced on a harp ,that you'd find your groove on it. I was scared as hell having this bass made but it's everything that I ever wanted in a tool. I does everything that I can imagine. I wish it could grow HAIR! Maybe I can fill up the chamber with Rogain?

Sounds like you're having a blast in AC, Wish I could get out there to check it out.
You had mentioned before that you might be playing out with your solo stuff sometime soon, any word on that. I'd love to make a trip into NYC to check it out.

I should probably mention, for those who don't realize it, that most extended-range slappers put a scrunchie around the neck to mute the strings that aren't being stopped... you can see this in stew's pics.

the trip was... weird. not bad, just very different. after so many years away I haven't quite wrapped my mind around the thought of going back.

once I'm gigging I will *definitely* post gig information as I get it!
