If you don't know much about Travis Bean Or Kramer, you ought to research them a bit.

There are excellent sites dedicated to both of them, and make for a very interesting read. Two unique and original companies that were similar, but at the same time, so different.

I had a DMZ5000 back in the early 80's. I remember that being one HEAVY bass. A Duke followed that one. I glued two Bart J's together to replace the stock PUP. The Duke was replaced by a Steinberger L2 (#958). I've always wanted that bass back!

Two fretless aluminum necks within a couple miles of each other.

The 'lumies were all the rage in Miami back in the 70's. They sounded great but heavy as heck. Recently, I found a Vaccaro aluminum neck 5 for sale and bought it for a very reasonable price. The Vaccaro is a close cousin of the Kramer, but differ in very significant ways - the entire neck is encased in wood, it has a truss rod, and the fingerboard is rosewood and has 24 frets. I installed Lace Alumitone j bass pickups, and damn what a nice sounding axe. It being a five string, it is probably pretty rare.

I have a Kramer 650B artist series (might be willing to sell it), a Vaccaro X-Ray and a Hartke XL-4 (made by Vaccaro). I live near Neptune and Asbury Park, where Henry Vaccaro made these great instruments. They have infinite sustain and sound like nothing else.

My '79 DMZ5000 is still my main axe. Bought it used in '80 or '81.

I had one like this for a while in the early '90s. The long defunct Kramer factory was just down the the road a few miles. Heaviest bass I've ever owned.
