any cabs that combine different sized speakers?

It's hardly a new idea. Gibson made some bass amps back in the 1960s with mixed speaker sizes (1-15 and 1-10 I think).

This is down to preference and the crossover point, and to assume that if you use these you like a harsh sound is just your opinion, I've used these units crossed over at 500Hz in a 3 way enclosure and found them to be very smooth.

I've used both closed-back Eminence 6.5" and 8" drivers, and their open back ones, and OEM Em/Carvin ones, and a couple from other brands including 18 Sound. With all behind a proper passive crossover, or better yet an steeper Linkwitz-Reilly active crossover, the closed-back variants do not sound as even through their passband.

What was the major difference? The open-back models were in larger stuffed chambers (though 0.075 cf is really all it takes to make an appreciable difference) with no walls so near to the driver backs - unlike the closed-back models. Having more space bhind the driver with proper absorptives keeps backwave reflections coming back up to the cone from being such a sonic issue as regards distortion and peaky response. To me the qualitative difference between enclosure style became increasingly obvious as I heard more of each.

My retired big rig, an Ampeg Extreme. Crossover from 18" subwoofer at 200 Hz to high-sensitivity sealed-cab 10" midbass, then at 1000 Hz to 6.5" closed-back Ems, and at 4000 Hz to tweeter horn (sounds better crossed over high than at the typical 2.5 KHz).

The modular and much lighter replacement that can demolish every bit as much or more. Carvin LS1503 with 6.5" 18 Sound 6ND410 in a 0.9 cf stuffed sealed chamber, with an Eminence Kappalite 3015LF below, crossed over passively at 500 Hz, or actively at 500 to 750 Hz depending on where it's used with the RL115 cab with matching Kappalite 3015LF.

The compression driver/horn is a much higher quality setup crossed over at 3K Hz passively, more even dispersion on- and off-axis nominally 90x60, integrates so well with the midrange cone you hardly know it is there until you turn it off - no hissy gack, no spikey hash.

GK amps are known to be ROCK solid and yet I have had problems with two of mine, and recent Ashdown issues are well documented. I can only speak for myself but never an issue with my LM II and I really use it, never a wimper.


... Drove it really hard last gig using my own MOjO Mini cabs and it did not even get warm!

Indeed! the pr1832he and it's little brother the pr1528he--downward angled 15, 2 front firing 8"'s --have them both--I think an interesting feature of these cabs is how deep the front-to-back dimension is--I don't know of any deeper.

also I played through a bag end that was 1x18 + 1x12+ horn--nice cab too!
