When I want that thumpy Motowny kind of sound, I cheat and wedge some foam makeup removers in between the E-A and D-G strings. They're inexpensive, plentiful, easy to adjust quickly for very different sounds/ degrees of muting, and are also fairly convenient for removing makeup.
