Hi Everyone,

With what I do at the gym I really need something to pass the time on the stationary bike. What I been reading is getting old, and going to finish one of my books.

I was considering an actual book from the library but was also giving serious thought to a Kindle due to convenience. I own an IPhone and IPad but I seen those Kindles and what they look like. I can see why they are easier on the eyes especially long reads.

Reviewing the wide selections and what not, but thought to see more opinions wherever I can get them.

I've had kindles and iPads and I got tired of taking both to places. So I just use the kindle app on either my iPhone or iPad. For long reading sessions ill use the iPad and for short ones I'll use my phone. Reading on an actual kindle is basically like reading from paper, but I've found that if you lower the contrast and switch to sepia mode, reading on the iPad is basically just as good. So I use the iPad because of that and the added bonus of everything else it does. If you're ok with just a reader then the kindle is a good choice.

Here's how it looks on my phone:

I will say this, if you want a kindle, I'd go for a used or refurbished third gen from eBay. They seem to be about 30 bucks and are all you need. The new ones are at least more than twice as much and the improvements are neglegable.

I picked up a samsung galaxy tab e for pretty darn cheap and don't regret it at all. The back lighting (and it's differing color settings) is where it's at. I read easily in a pitch black room. I'm also older with pretty piss poor eye-sight so the bigger screen ( 9.6 in ) was another selling point for me. while not heavy, as such, it might be more than you'd want to hold on a stationary bike unless you had a stand of some sort.

Well before stationary bike I am doing weighted pull-ups, weighted dips, leg lifts, hyperextenions, rows, and bench press plus another core exercise. So if I can't hold that for 20 + minutes I am doing something wrong.

I hold it while walking on my treadmill with no issue. I also like that is it wifi enabled. I can play music or watch netflix ( or comcast ) on it. Much more than just a reader. Very nice HD picture too.

I decided to save money I am just going to use the IPhone and if I find that screen too small will just use one of the 2 IPads we have. Also, the lady has a Kindle that she never uses BUT the only issue I would have taking it to the gym is I walk in with the case she has on it, well lets just say I will be very much embarrassed.

I have a third gen Kindle, great device. I keep it in my backpack loaded with books for when I’m at work or traveling. The screen is easy on the eyes, but the only downside is reading in low light conditions, there’s no backlight on this model. Still, I recommend it.

I bought a kindle because I was taking some long international flights. Now it comes in handy when I ride public transit. I use it now more than I thought I would. There are free book and others are less expensive than you would normally pay for a new book. There is also an app from my local public library that allows me to borrow books instantly.
I use it mostly for fiction. If there is something I need to study I still like paper so I can highlight and take notes right in the book. You can do some of this on a Kindle but it is not the same for me.
Don't know how it would work at the gym. Never tried that.

I have an early Kindle fire but when I got an Android tablet and a smart phone it became obsolete...I always have one or both of the other two, so why carry the Kindle? I can use the Kindle app on either of them, or on my PC.

If you want a really inexpensive unit that won't break the bank if it's lost, might be a handy thing to have. For an exercise evening, it might be just the thing.

Use my Paperwhite Kindle for reading all my books--sometimes sync-continuing on my iPhone or iPad. The Kindle reads beautifully in the hot bright sun (mmmmm....) and the batteries last forever on a charge. Really light for reading in bed, lying on the couch, etc. Takes little space and adds little weight in a bag. Beautiful device!

Paperwhite is awesome. That E-Ink is a criminally under-used tech (or criminally expensive to implement/license, not sure which)

One last question I swear. She allowed me to have/use the Kindle Touch that I bought for her as a birthday present when we first started to date (5 years ago) and she NEVER used it! Anyway, not that I am bitter or anything even though "she had to have it" I am not a fan of the case: some designer like Tory Burch and Michael Kors and etc. The point is, I do NOT want to walk into the gym with this case. Also since it's no longer being made/sold (except for used ones) seems impossible to find a case for it.

I was thinking of buying a case associated to the newer ones but found the dimensions are slightly different and not sure if the slight difference will prevent me from using it. In short, I just want a plain black case with a cover and that's it. Solid, leather, plastic i don't care. Just not what she has it in now.
