Since Rob Wright and Tracy Pew and a couple of other great bass players have been mentioned in this thread, I feel compelled (as usual) to mention one of my unsung heroes of bass:
MICHAEL GERALD of the band KILLDOZER.
One of my favoritest bands of the 80s and early 90s. Gerald was also their lead vocalist.
They were a trio and verrrry bass-heavy. Some of their songs are nearly all pummeling rhythm with the guitar just kind of screeching and crashing around on top in glorious feedback-drenched dissonance (not completely unlike early Flipper stuff, but tighter and with (IMO) a better sense of humor.
