Any love for Rogue basses?

I've had two. I bought my first one when they were just coming out. Basic 4str P/J. I swapped the pretty weak stock p'ups, and gigged the snot out of it for about 7yrs. The other was a LX405pro that, after a p'up swap and good set-up,beat out both of my Fen 5's. Strangely,I never had a problem with either one. The necks were straight, frets were good, finish was actually beautiful(sunset quilt). I have/had some very nice basses, and sadly that Rogue 5'r got the most compliments and questions.Especially from other musicians that refused to believe they just got rock'd by a Rogue!

Glad to hear you got a good one too..and that I'm not the only one afraid to brag about it ;)

My only experience with Rogue is their VB100 viola bass which I found to be a very pleasant surprise--same bass as the Epiphone viola but $100 cheaper and with the more Hofner accurate headstock shape and control plate. It's been a solid player for me now for several years.

+1. But I've heard a number of times that these were very much the exception for Rogue.

I think Rogue is a great bass unless you are looking for playability, tone, craftsmanship, comfort, not being laughed off stage, resale value, a sense of pride, or respect for yourself as a bass player.

I've always wondered how many posts like this were made by people who actually have hands-on experience with whatever gear they're flaming..

Attitude fail. You see, I don't judge myself by what the headstock of my bass says. If it sounds, plays, feels good enough then I'll rock it! I've never been laughed off stage, only asked to join other bands :)

Amen! Of all the poster on this thread I sincerely doubt there are more than three (myself included) who have ever inspected much less played an LX-406 pro. I think there's just lot's of silly folks out there who pass off an entire brand based off of one product and think that anything with less than a 1K price tag must not be worthy.

In fact my first bass ever was a rogue four string and yes, it was pretty sad, just played and sounded miserable. But, I kept an open mind and found a budget 6er that I'm happy with.

Not a bass , but I did have a Rogue bass amp. Terrible. I would never get a Rogue bass without trying it first, and considering there are decent basses out there at similar prices, that I'd be more sure of (SX for example), I'd be less likely to even bother that much.

One of my sons friends had one, He gave it to me to set up ( I do all their guitars and basses) and after a fret level, dress, polish and good setup it actually played good. The tone was what you'd expect for the electronics in the price range, but i had no problem getting a useable tone from it. For the money, it wasnt bad.

I got one of the Rogue Beatles basses years ago, probably not long after they came out. Horrible tone. There are way better cheap basses out there, IMO.

Funny because I upgraded just about everything on mine (lighter, smaller, sealed pro tuners & keys/new wiring harness/ new pots, caps & switches/new shielding plate/new jack & plate/ gold, pearl topped control knobs/Hofner tailpiece) along with a fret level & dressing. The only thing I didn't change was the pickups. I liked the tone to begin with and with the new pots & wiring, they sound better than ever.

I dunno, for a hollow-body, this thing's a pretty damned "solid" little bass.

I wish I could like mine, believe me. The pickups were what the tech I took it to was most critical of. Considering how much I disliked the way the bass sounded, there wasn't much I could say. This is in spite of the fact that I do remember making somewhat of an attempt to defend the bass when I was talking to him, pointing out that I really needed a light bass due to a neck/shoulder problem. He did agree that if that was the case, it did make sense to have a bass that only weighed a few pounds, though.

The thing about super cheap basses likes Rogues is that they're super unpredictable. A lot of people get lucky and sing praises of the brand because they had a good experience. They got one of the good ones. But there are plenty of bad ones, and people who first try one of those will usually write off the brand, because the really unlucky ones get simply non-functional instruments. I recently got a six string SX J-bass, and I absolutely love it, but I knew there was a chance it would suck

Brands like SX (and the other rondo brands) are popular because they are tried and true designs and have a pretty high success rate (plus Rondo's return policy is good if you get a lemon). There's no love for Rogue because it seems like there are more people that get unlucky than there are people like you who got a nice one. So the prevailing opinion is that they suck.

Yeah, as I posted earlier, I've heard that a lot (though the older VB100's generally seem to get fairly consistent, decent reviews - don't know about the newer Chinese versions).

And though at the time I bought it, weight wasn't a big consideration, like Rocker949, I've now got some physical issues (looking at a second surgery for a likely re-herniated disc), so I feel I was doubly lucky with this bass, the light weight being unexpected icing on the cake.
