Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my Sadowsky and have been looking into the 4 knob uni-pre by John East. Are there any TBers who have this preamp or have had some experince with them. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Ive pulled the trigger on one of the John East Uni Pre's. Will update the post once I have got it and put in my bass.
Just got my Sadowsky back from the shop with the John East Uni-Pre installed and man it rocks!! The preamp fitted fine into the existing cavity and there were no issues. What a difference having mid boost and variable mid freq selection! The original Sad pre was alright but it was boost only and if you boosted both treble and bass all you would get is a scooped sound. Also I found the bass boost a bit muddy. But with the uni-pre you can adjust the freq of both the treble and the bass internally to get the desired sound. Its like a whole new bass with a way broader range of sounds. I feel modern basses need mids and this preamp delivers heaps! It was definitley worth the extra money and would recommend to anyone with a M5-24.
I am considering the 4 knob uni-pre for a custom bass build. Do you happen to know how much current the system draws? I'm hoping to be able to power it with a fishman fluence universal rechargeable battery pack: https://www.fishman.com/portfolio/universal-rechargeable-battery-pack/ Apparently it has short circuit protection at 10mA current draw. Is that sufficient?
Are you running this at 9v or 18v? I believe 18v gives you more headroom? I wonder how much of that headroom is actually usable as I have heard under 9v operation it will clip the frontend of your amp when pushed anyway?
I'm not sure how much current the system draws, you should probably go to the east web site and email John directly. He's replied to me with my questions and been very helpful. With running it at 9 or 18v, I just run it at 9v as my Sadowsky only has the one battery slot and theres been no issues. In regards to amp clipping I found it depends on the gain setting on your amp. I run my bass through a markbass head and if I have the gain all the way down and the bass at 100% I get no clipping, but if I crank the gain to noon with the bass at full volume it starts to clip. Hope this helps.
I emailed John and got the following detailed information exactly as needed "UNI-PRE should be no issue on 9V, 10mA max, UNI-PRE takes ~5mA which makes it thirstier than many units, which is about performance and all the versatility of EQ variations and modes. We put performance first, power consumption has to be reasonable, of course. When a UNI-PRE fires up there is some inrush current to charge various capacitors, initially 10mA for an instant should be fine for fast fire-up." Super helpful chap and I have just placed my order
