Any other “oldies” lovers here?

I'm not talking just old songs, I'm talking more what they call oldies, usually in the context of songs they played growing up in the hood.

I grew up in East LA so these are all the kinds of songs I heard as a kid at the parties my mom would throw, when low riders would cruise Whittier Blvd., etc.

These songs were already old when I heard them as a kid around in the late 60s/early 70s range, and I hated them then because it was not the best environment I grew up in, and they had a bad association. Now that I've grown up I really appreciate them.

"East Side Story" series and Art Laboe had many of them, But they were songs like night owl, baby I'm for real, I'm your puppet, the Oogum Boogum song, dry your eyes, etc. Artists like Ralfi Pagan, Brenton Wood,brenda and the tabulations, the Originals, etc.



Any of you relate to this?

My tastes go towards earlier times, 1930's through to the 50's.

I love oldies too including the stuff you mentioned, I grew up with that stuff but to me my favorite oldies are from the 50's and early 60's, it was basically before my time so I had a great time learning about it when I got really sick of the new crap sometime during the mid 80's. Having lived in LA for 17 years, I get what you're talking about, but I'm guessing that the concept will go over the heads of most people here... it's a specific set of songs, part of the car club, Whittier Blvd., Thump Records, Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet thing. Don't forget "Angel Baby". It's similar to the "Beach Music" scene(of the coastal Southeast US). If you mention that, most people think you mean surf music or the Beach Boys. Wrong. But it took me a while to figure that out.

I just skimmed through that album, they play a lot of stuff like that on SiriusXM's Soul Town channel, great stuff. If you don't have it check it out.

I can relate. I used to listen to Art Laboe on KRLA, when I wasn't listening to KHJ, KMPC, or KFWB-before it went "all news all the time". I grew up in east, east El Lay, just the other side of San Gabriel and Rosemead.

Love this genre. It's so soulful and timeless. IMO.
