Any other actors around here?

I was a professional actress starting at age 12. Mostly film & TV but did some theatre, too. Worked at it on and off until my 30s and then decided I really don't like that end of the biz - although I do love acting and am very glad for all the studying I did over the years. Did a lot of work in film and theatre production between acting roles, directed some home-grown shows with various colleagues. Went on to produce a number of large multimedia projects and corporate conferences. Wrote songs and sang and jammed with folks on an amateur level since my teen years. Spent three years writing a novel. Never got published but got some great feedback from folks in the industry. Decided that was enough of that for the time being, foundered around for a couple of years, wondering what to do next for a creative outlet. Moved in with a bass player and lo and behold, got bit by the music bug again and am now lead singer, lyricist and band leader (for whatever that's worth - we operate as a democracy) for an original rock band. We're close to launching the band, having just recorded our demo. Great guys with lots of experience. Just working out the bugs, getting the material tight, and then we'll be marketing ourselves for gigs. Haven't performed in years. Nervous, but really excited to get back on stage! It hasn't been dull, that's for sure! :D

I've done some amateur theater, and was once an extra on a Finnish comedy movie by a comedy group Kummeli.

The "Jehovan witness" who suffles his papers is in fact a pretty good Finnish blues/rock musician Heikki Hela. The lead actor in that flick Heikki Silvennoinen, is also a great musician.

Well I've been striking out lately but I had two recent opportunities.
Not sure if I'll make it to the screen or not but I'm an extra in:

and at the end of the week I'll know if I get a speaking role in an upcoming A&E special about post Civil-War America. Cool stuff. keeping fingers crossed!

To have any decent roles, yeah it's very tough. But if you just enjoy the experience, joining a decent casting agency will at least get you some stuff from time to time. That's what I did.

TV/Film acting is very very dry, methodical, and it's really hard to see at the time how it fits in with the larger story. It's like recording music in the studio where you're trying to get just one teeny part just right before you can hear the whole song. Theater acting flows as though your playing the whole song... I'm terrible at theater acting..:(

Very cool! Good luck with that! They are now filming the new Nicholas Cage & John Cusack movie, Frozen Ground (based on the true story of a serial killer we had here in Anchorage). They were auditioning local actors for a few speaking roles and some extra roles. I wanted to audition but I just don't have the available time right now. I'm pretty bummed out about the missed opportunity--at least to audition.

I was in some Sears commericals as a kid but I haven't really been on TV since I've been old enough to know what was happening. I love theater acting. I enjoy the whole experience of having to think fast and ad lib if/when something goes wrong. I like to hear the audience laugh too. It's fun trying to be funny without laughing yourself.

That's the biggest problem with it - casting calls and the filming if you make it are chaos.
It always seems to be a situation where they'll tell you like one week ahead of time to be in "XYZ, North Carolina" (insert any 6-hour ride/location), "filming will be for 3 days"
You make last minute arrangements with work and family then get an update 2 days prior: "filming is delayed. You will be given a new date as soon as one is available", then you wait and wait... then get a call: "filming is tomorrow, can you make it?"

My wife too. She was actually selected to be on an episode on NY Ink, they were going to tattoo one of her art pieces onto her arm. It sounded great until we found out it was at our own expense...OK, even then the opportunity was great for an artist so she agreed. Signed contractual paperwork, submitted the art design, it was accepted then they tell her to report 8 AM at the filming location on a certain date. then...they change the date...then they cancel that one...then they call her the night before and ask her for the next morning... then they call back and cancel that one. She just told them that she's no longer interested... waaaay too stressful and chaotic.

I got my start in amateur theater! I got my first role when I was 10 or 11, and was involved in community theater pretty much through high school.

I can sing (Though my voice is deeper these days) so I played Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat. (Actually, Donny reprized my role!)

I think that was where I fell in love with the adulation that is applause, and how I ended up here 30 some odd years later......
