Any Peavey users here?

So I'm going into town tomorrow with a few friends, and I've been looking for a new rig. I've tried a Markbass little mark 250 and loved it, but they also have the Peavey Tour 450 and 700. What I'm asking is if you own a Peavey amp, what are they like to live with?

Well, you will find lots of love for Peavey around here. I'll give you my less than stellar review though. I had a nitro which was 450 @ 2 ohms. I ran it into a 4 ohm cab so 300w. It sounded ok, but I felt it was a bit weak, clipping easily, and it was big and heavy. It would have been nice to have built in compression because that would probably have helped tame the clipping some. I don't know about the tour series as I haven't tried them out.

Personally, I'm a big fan of older Peavey, older as in 2 years and back. I've had virtually every peavey amp in the last 10 years, minus the big tube monsters. T-Max, BAM head and combo, ProBass 500 (my current fave), MAX 700/Firebass II, MAX preamp, etc...then I tried the new Tour 700 to replace my ProBass. It went back in a week. It's build quality looks crappy to me. The mute button did not mute 100%, I could still hear a touch of signal at both the speaker outs and DI out. It just felt cheaper to me than every other Peavey head I've had.

Being made in China doesn't help either. I will likely keep buying used Peavey gear, made in US stuff, until it no longer is feasible to do so (that could be a LONG time I'm guessing).

Just buy one from a place that has a nice return policy, and try it out. For the money, it's certainly not a rip off.

I use to own a Peavey Mega bass head back in the day and it was bullet proof. I always liked Peavey gear , but I am not sure the new stuff is still as bullet proof as it was. that said I tried the tour 450 and felt it had some decent tone and power seemed worthy for the price, but some of the controls seemed a little cheaper then the old days. You could also take a look a Carvin good bang for the buck if your on a budget like most of us.

I don't get this. I run my Nitro with the pre-gain anywhere from 6 1/2 to 7 and the volume between 3 and 5 and leave the DDT speaker protect circuit enabled, and it's plenty loud with an "old" Dr. bass 4 ohm RX212. The clip light (actually the speaker protect light) comes on a lot, particularly when I slap, but the tone doesn't change at all when it does, and I've never worried about it. They are heavy suckers, though.

I've owned a lot of Peavey stuff as well although never the tube stuff.I've had heads, combos, power amps, preamps & speaker cabinets.PA stuff too.It was all bulletproof & 100% reliable.
Having said that I must state that I agree with Synterx. Some of the newer stuff seems cheezy.I tried that tour 700 & felt the same way he did.
Consider used with Peavey. The older gear pops up used for very reasonable money quite often.

I've got a PV Firebass 700 that I bought back in 2001. I only use as a practice amp now, but up until Jan. 07' it was my main amp and I played almost every weekend so it's gotten alot of use; never failed me. I also have a PV TNT 115 that I've had since June 04' that I use for smaller gigs and it's never failed me, either. In case your wondering what my current system is, well it's a Carvin SBR1018 (BX1200 head w/4x10 & 1-18 cabs) and it's never failed me, also.;)

One small footnote - all my amps have been played a whole lot of hours, considering that I play almost every weekend.:smug:

I've been gigging with Peavey gear for around 15 years now - I never had one let me down at a gig... For a reference, I played aroud 70 gigs last year... I've owned Mark III, IV, VI, VIII, Firebass 700, T-Max, and Combo 300s - besides more than a few of their cabs... For cabs, I currently own a 210TVX, 410TVX, 215D-BW, and an 1810, and am using a pair of T-Max amps - I use the 10s for modern rock, and the 15s for classic rock or blues...

Turning up to 3 and calling it plenty loud may be why you don't get it. That's the same thing I did when I was in the store trying it out. Once I got it home and started putting it through it's paces, pushing the limits, running smaller cabs, etc. I found that headroom was lacking. That's just my experience.

OTOH, I have nothing but good things to say about the headroom and power of the TNT 115 combo that I also, until about 2 months ago, owned since '95. Only sold it because I don't have room to store it if I'm not using it.
