Yebbut I'm in the UK and shipping cost from the states is prohibitive! I've been collecting offcuts at work so hope to machine something up soon.

If you are going to make your own rail, at least use a strip of aluminum bar stock for the lip that the upper hook pulls on. That's the weak spot. The rest of the rail can be a nice hardwood.

Looks like with a little bit of modification you could just screw these things into studs and call it a day.

Remove the “spinny thing” and put a few washers behind the plate, screw through the holes. Black pan head screws would be nice.

Or a block of wood to fill the space. I’d probably take a grinder or saw and cut the bent part off, then mount flat to the wall.

If 16” stud spacing is too wide, or the axes need to hang in a visually pleasing arrangement, just mount a nice looking board to span as many studs as you can. Screw the hangers into the solid wood.

That slat wall stuff looks kinda spendy.

You did mention six year olds….

That's what I'd do. Especially since the thread not long ago where the particleboard slatwall broke at the T-slots.

Finished this off today, thanks for all the help/ advice. I temporarily fixed it to the wall at work and tested it by hanging my body weight from two hangers, so I guess it's plenty strong enough.
