Anybody actually like Warwick necks?

When I went into GC yesterday I got my first chance to play a Warwick. I was thinking of how bad the neck would be but as soon as I played it the neck felt great!:eyebrow: I like slim necks and all but something about that fat neck feels good. Just kind of like I know it's there and it's really sturdy. Anyone else feel this way?

BTW, what are your opinions of the 'vette standard vs. 'vette ash vs. 'vette proline? I really liked the one I played yesterday and am thinking about getting it (it was an ash bodied one).

It's not the neck I hate, I waxed mine a bunch of times, the only problem is the freaking nut at the headstock, it hurts my hands because it protrudes out.

I'm going to be a wee bit controversial here, but IMHO if your technique is good then thick neck or thin neck you'll adapt without issues and without thinking (too much!)

Well said! My thoughts exactly. If the technique's there all it takes is a period of adjustment. There have been many times I've gotten a different bass and thought "Oh man, I'll never be able to get used to this". A few days later it feels like I've been playing it for years.

I'm playing a Streamer Std. (German made) and I love the neck. When I put my hand around it, it feels like I'm playing a solid piece of instrument. I'm pretty big at 6'3" so maybe it's that I have bigger hands to get around the neck. I'm comming from starting on a thin Fender neck and an equally thin Lakland neck.

I had a late 90's Corvette FNA with a wenge neck. I liked the feel and the sound. I HATED the flat fingerboard. It was like there was no radius at all. Not that I'm a great player or anything of the sort, but I couldn't get past the flat board. It sat unplayed while my Epic got all the play time. I ended up selling it cheap to make closet space.

Its what sizzles your shamizzle!! I love the neck thru warwick necks apart from the wide spacing ones. My NT5 is perfect! I play fender & Tomkins basses profesionally too & I like them. Personally the older warwick wenge/bubinga necks are the best.

+1000 to that.

Each to their own. If its comfy for you, then buy it. If not...... Dont!

Cheers all!

I have 5 basses; the latest is a Warwick $$.
IMO great instrument; I love the feel of the neck.
My G&L has their #8 Jazz Bass neck; my Tobias has a super-fast assymetrical neck witha 15" radius (fast, like a Ferrari!), etc. etc.
But the Warwick neck has its own feel, very comfortable and intuitive to me. It's easy to move position up & down the neck. Feels nice and gives great tone between strings...
Also, the ovangkol/wenge has a nice touch and tone; the brass frets have a super defined sound- I like the whole package very much.
I understand that the 'Wick vibe and feel does not fill every player with joy. Understood.
But the "baseball bat' analogy. Gettin' old, very lame. IMO.:D

Is one supposed to wax the warwick necks? I thought only the bodies can be waxed...

I own a `97 Thumb BO with wenge neck and fingerboard and brass nut. The neck is very slim and feels very comfortable. Is the thick neck syndrome found on later Warwicks exclusively>

IME the ovangkol necks(usually post-98 or so)are thicker than the wenge ones, but all the 5 & 6s I've played regardless of year were noticeably much thicker front-to-back than the 4s. The one wide neck I owned- a bolt-on Thumb 5- was very thick.

Edit: I've also waxed my necks w/no adverse effects. Made it feel nice.:D

I really liked the neck on the Streamer Stage II 5'er that I played over the summer.

My tastes run towards big necks, but even so, there's never been a Warwick I've played that's made me think "Man, this thing is huge!" or whatever. They're pretty comfortable, IMO.

I think the whole "Warwicks have a neck like a baseball bat" thing gets overblown somewhat here.

I have two mid 90's Warwicks with wenge necks that are leaps and bounds ahead of the '99 Streamer ProM ovankol necked one I used to have. Just preference, I guess.

I wax the necks too; if anything, it makes them rather slippery-smooth.

ooh! i can add to this one as i just got my streamer jazzman5 today!
took it to practice and loved it. my other main axe a mex Pbass, and strangely the transition was pretty quick.
i used to have a yammy trb5 and the neck on that was flat and wide and i had trouble with fretting hand cramps on that bass, so it will be interesting to see how the warwick goes. so far after a 3 hour practice, no sign of fatigue. very comfy!
i just think the slightly square shape changes your hand position, sure stopped my "thumb over" grip i usually have!

I absolutley love the old 7 piece Wenge/bubinga neck on my '88 Thumb NT.

One thing that always shocked me are the HUGE difference in size between the BO and the NT warwicks.

I recently played a NT Katana at a Dallas GC and absolutely loved it. Now i am pushing back my CS project and saving for the Katana. The all flame maple neck on it just felt amazing.
