Anybody else getting their kitchen redone?

Life is hard when your bathroom becomes your kitchen.

We just had new flooring installed in the kitchen, a bathroom, 1/2 bath and foyer.
What a mess to clean up afterwards. Dirt/dust all through the house.

Floor is being finished today. We're paying through the nose for this remodel, but the workers are complete pros and I'm grateful for that. They turned our apartment into a plastic tunnel like place that kinda hard to describe - but we have zippered plastic doors on 3 openings surrounding the area around the kitchen. It's spotless outside. They're impeccably clean workers. I was impressed to see that when they demoed the old cabinets and walls, they took everything outside and busted it up in their truck. Not in my place, nor even the street. They are ultra respectful workers.

We're into week 2 now. Hoping this doesn't go much longer. Toughest part is traveling between those zippered doors whenever water is needed for rinsing, drinking, or whatever. I'm thinking we should stop soaking our plates in the toilet bowl too, I don't think it's the best way to get the job done. We're workin on it though....

Oy.... :banghead:

As we speak there are several contractors at my house.

Plumber
General contractor adding a few things and rebuilding a few things.
Vinyl guy working with the general.
Pool guy - replacing the liner, pump and salt filter system.
Gutter guy finishing up new gutters.
HVAC guy is fixing some sort of "stuck valve" on my two year old upstairs unit.

What do you even call the guy who puts a dehumidifier and seal under your house in the crawlspace? Whatever he is, he's there too.

My wife went home for lunch. Our driveway is 50 yards long. She had to park by the mailbox. It's like a county contractor's association meeting is being held at my house. All of them were having a good chuckle with her when she walked down the driveway. She asked how many pizzas it would take to feed everyone. (Knowing her, she probably actually wound up ordering pizzas.)

All that being said, I bet having no kitchen is even worse.

I don't envy kitchen work. We'll be doing some minor work on ours next year, but nothing that will prevent us from using it as a kitchen. I also totally DIY this stuff, so the pace will be totally on me, and that saves me a ton of money.
You mention an apartment -- are you renting? And paying for this remodel?

Two fingers - that is also a whole lot of work going on at once. Wow.

Not a full redo, that was about a year ago now, but wifey dislikes the fancy three bowl sink she picked out when we redid the whole thing so i’ve got a new, more traditional two bowl unit i’ve got to get swapped out. So far she’s only asking occasionally why her new sink is still in the box. I gently remind her i still do the bulk of the cooking and kitchen chores and i dislike the idea of replacing a sink for no other reason than someone seems to think it looks out of place with the general theme she was going for when she decided she had to have a specialized three bowl food prep sink instead of a general purpose kitchen sink that is easier to wash dishes in. Either way, she will win this (she always does) and i will be a good boy and replace her sink, but for now i’m finding plenty of plausable reasons to be too busy to get around to it. If i’m lucky she will give in and call a plumber to come swap out the sinks. Who am i kidding, my luck is rarely good when it comes to opposing wifey.

i wondered how that was going. as contractors go, sounds like yours are a joy to have around the house.

when we couldn't use our kitchen, we filled a bunch of gallon bottles with tap water and used them for washing/rinsing. the toilet bowl somehow didn't occur to us :D

sounds like a combination of a sitcom and a living hell.

i think the guy who puts in the dehumidifier is also an HVAC guy, no?

Just finished an entire kitchen and spare bathroom overhaul. Everything, I mean everything. Next is the master bath but probably not until next year. It was like a total of three weeks with contractors in the house. Drove me nuts then but now I’m glad we finally did it.

My parents just finished having their kitchen re-done.
They couldn't handle the idea of all the mess involved (Your contractor sounds awesome, I don't think I've ever heard of one that took that sort of effort to minimise mess).
They went to a hotel for the week.
Mind you, knowing hotel prices in NY, that wouldn't have been an option.
Hope it's all worth it in the end!

Too many times to count over the last 30+ years.
Once, in 1999, it was our kitchen. I found the process to be mostly painless and trouble free, but I also worked in the construction industry. The one issue we ran into was the cabinets. Someone entered the wrong color code when ordering. I didn't really notice as they were unloading the cabinets on delivery day, but my wife sure did.
The cabinet shop offered us a huge discount to keep them, but my wife wasn't having it. She still scored herself a sweet discount, and the exact color cabinets she wanted.

Kitchen remodels count for about 50% of my business. I'm planning my own now, and will hopefully get to it next year. I will be building ,finishing, and installing my own cabinets. And everything else.
Sounds like you have a good crew. I'm glad to hear they are using a Zipwall system. I wouldn't worry about zipping up the doors after they are gone. Give it an hour to let the dust settle and leave them open. Unless there is some reason they need them closed, like lead paint dust, or whatever..
Post pics of the finished product. I love getting new ideas from other areas if the world.

We have one bathroom. Its renovation caused some challenges. The kitchen was easy by comparison. We got a small 'fridge and a microwave and paper plates and used the back bedroom as the kitchen. Our son thought both were pretty great. The kitchen was OK, the bathroom was a pain, never mind what the kid thought.
