Anybody have luck with Craigslist?

We've tried Bandmix a number of times, seems to be a bit better at narrowing down the type of musician you're looking for, but most of what we've seen is someone who gets to the audition and doesn't quite live up to the profile they've created for the web page.
It's ALL about the location. It means your pool of options is just that much bigger. NY is probable the crème og the crop for options. The Seattle area is hot for live music too.
I think in general, you want to get as close to whatever metro area you can for the best chances at a decent CL hook up.
I'm sure that's pretty easy to do. Who hasn't been guilty of fibbing on an ap or resume here and there.

We only used it once for one person. So we're batting 100%. I don't think thats a good representative sample.
You've just been unlucky and or are just in a crappy place for live music. You really have to get to a region that has a night life and "scene." For instance, very professional bands and acts pop up in the Seattle area, I imagine it's 10x better in a city like New York or L.A.
Yeah, it's just bad luck so far. The right people will turn up if we beat the bushes long enough. The music scene here isn't as vibrant as it once was, so there is a lack of musicians in the area. It just takes time....You gotta pay yer dues if you wanna play the blues.
Actually, NYC SUCKS for this. It's all the worst flakes and dreamers mentioned, just more of them. It's always needles in haystacks. Anywhere.
I'm seriously at a loss then and can only assume there's some kind of magic in all the rain up here, because I've had tremendous opportunities and good luck on CL. I'm not even that good, more of a second call guy, particularly with some of the jazz acts I've the privilege to play with.
Certainly to toot my own horn and perhaps provide some proof...
I met this gal on CL and signed up with her project. The ad was looking for a bass man to be on her album and when I heard she exceeded her kickstarter goal and heard her sound, I was in the studio with her the next week, seemingly.
Samples from the album available on the big sitrtibutors like iTunes...
Big tour this summer possibly including Ireland or London where we're getting some airplay. And if that wasn't enough. her mother is a heavy hitter in the jazz scene and tapped me for The Cascade Jazz Quartet.
That was just one response to a single CL ad. Don't give up, never give up, keep on groovin'!
Most of the bands I've joined and most of the people I've hired came from craigslist. You just have to be patient and judicious in your choices. Go with your gut whether you're joining or hiring. I can generally weed out the ghetto ones on the phone on first contact. If not, the audition confirms one way or the other.

I have had good luck selling stuff on CL - although sometimes it takes a while. Never met a flake buying or selling bass stuff! Bass players are cool.
For bands - LOTS of mis-fits. Guys that want to do Hendrix. Guys still looking for other players. I did meet two decent bands, but think that they were looking for someone younger. It is really tough. Plus there are tons of very good musicians here in LA. I am now just passing the word through my other musician friends.

Gotta chime in here to say it's not all that bad. Again, just know how to look for quality. I do agree that there's more noise though, since there are more people.
Yeah, I think that's what I was trying to say. We just have more of everything here.
I've had good luck with CL. I've answered 3 ads in the last few years and they've all been good for me. Two of the three worked out and the third had nothing to do with the individuals being flakes or anything.
On a side note, I was just looking through my local Austin CL and it seems about every third post someone is looking for a bass player. Haven't checked it in a few months but I've never seen it this bass needy before. Lol.
