anyone else have a Peavey 215(black widow) ??

anyone know anything about it? its an older Peavey 2X15, Black widow speakers.

Any owners here?
i'd like to know dimensions, weight, sound, etc.

ha, used to, back in 1976 or so. Big, loud, heavy .. make sure you have sufficient watts to make it hum.

Those old PV cabs are well made and very punchy. If yours is like mine there is a slot port between the speakers with a baffle made of good quality plywood - not imparticular board like later cabs. It is a fairly heavy cabinet and mine is loaded with Mesa/EV 15L Black Shadow speakers with a wizzer cone. You will need 200-300 watts to get the cabinet up to speed for a punchy articulate sound with enough lows to move furniture.

I don't remember the size... but think 810. It's a HEAVY cab. Used to own one of those with a Mark IV bass head. At the time it was great. Don't know the dimensions, but if I remember correctly the cab was around 135lbs

Please please report back on your experiences with this cab, maybe even post on the sound clips thread ( http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=474486 ) if you would, OK? I am in lub with this cab, which is for sale at a local used gear shop. I don't need it and don't have any money in the gear budget. But I am waiting for either someone to buy it up and remove the temptation from me or to provoke me in a band situation and "force" me into buying it, out of "necessity" - anyway, please let me know how you like it at louder than store volume. TY

Peavey 215 BW cab? I used one with a MKIV head in the 80's, it was reliable as an anvil, sounded decent and was heavy.

i have one of those. i've been trying to sell it for about 6 months now. it's big (about the size of an ampeg 810) and it's probably around 90 lbs. just a guess.

People who compare it to an 810 are exaggerating just a tad (especially in weight, the 215 is much lighter than most 810s ive experienced)!

There were two different kinds of Peavey 215 with BWs, the standard and the deep one. I've got the deep one, and it kicks! And it isnt like you would expect a 215 to sound, it is punchy, is really clean and has these crystal clear and crisp high end

Here is a pic of mine, next to my 810, not the same size really

The Peavey 215 D BW is easily the best 215 I have played and I have played a number of major makers, Ampeg, Trace Elliot, Marshall ...


(and it only cost £75 )

I would if I could, but it isnt in my flat.

The shallower one is ~13 inchs deep, the deeper one is ~18inchs deep (from memory).

Going by the fact the 215 + head is about the same size as my 810. 810 = 49.5 inchs. The 215 would be ~40-41 inchs high. Depth depends on model. Width would be about (guessing) 27-30 inch.

I had a Peavey 2x15BW about 30 years ago now. It was brilliant with an old Fender Bassman head. Great sound but I don't miss shifting it around

I measured mine real quick with a yard stick, and not counting the casters it's 40 x 25-1/4 x 14-3/8 inches. I need to find my tape measure to get a more accurate measure, but I hope that helps. Mine's from 1985, bought NOS in early 86. It's a great sounding 2x15 cab that I still use with it's original BW's for when I need the mojo that only a big cab can do. I also have the Mark IV head I bought with that cab and it's one of the better sounding solid state heads that Peavey made imho. That too still runs just fine and hasn't even spit up a fuse in it's 22 years of service.

Pardon me for digging this one up, but I have a question- is this 215-D, in your estimation, going to be able to do the genuine deep-dub trip in a reggae band? I find many 215 cabs are great in the low mids, but that's where they drop away. Very-lows are not really the 215 forte, generally speaking.

But I love them the most of all the formats, and have a chance to land this one. If it qualifies as a reggae-box then I will go snag it up. Out of "necesstiy", of course...

I gigged with a 215D-BW for years and I honestly wish I never sold it. It sounded amazing, quite possibly the best 2x15 I have ever played through. I got more complements on my tone and more bassists coming up to ask what cab it was then I have with any other cab aside from my 4x12
The deep version will work great for reggae or dub music.
Great lows, great highs, crystal clear even.

Anyone got one they want to get rid of??

I'd think it should be fine. It won't act like a sub, so if that is more what you are looking for, then maybe that's a better path to go down.
