Anyone else like to LARP?

I'd rather try the SCA version with the wooden swords and actual armor/full contact stuff.

I had a friend who was into it, and he demonstrated a sword smack while I held his shield. Those rattan swords can give a pretty good wallop.

Tried it. Wasnt my thing.

Decent to absolutely awful costumes, people would use the worst stuff to get a higher armor value.

Bad to awful acting, not too much more to say about this.

The fighting isn't people actually fighting. It's everyone knowing exactly how far back the have to bring their wrist to constitute a hit and doing that as fast as possible.

It's the worst parts of gaming with having to look at your fellow gamers and hide your disappointment with everything. Everyone's a meta-gamer maximizing everything and not immersing themselves.

SCA is a romping good time. The sword ( or mace, bow etc :D ) fighting is a small part ( but a FANTASTIC part ) of it. It's also a great work out and can be done on the cheap ( carpet armor ) to pretty stinking expensive suits of mail. Make no mistake, though. You WILL be bruised and you WILL hurt :D It is very like Kali in that regard.

I play a HARP sometimes :D

I play HAARP. I win!

I had a friend trying hard to get me to do that (SCA) figuring that this would be right up my alley, as I'm into all sorts of living history/reenacting type stuff. I may still try it eventually. My problem is that I already have too many expensive hobbies...this one cant possibly be cheap..:crying:

Late teens - starving college students and everything in between participate :) It can be quite inexpensive. The people that participate are really super cool and will share equipment. I started that way a long time ago ( I no longer do though ) A few friends still are into it. Most make their own armor ( I made my own boiled leather (cuirboulli) - It was not cheap, but the experience of making authentic armor was VERY cool. As I mentioned duct taped carpet armor ( literally scraps of carpet taped to your body. and a length of rettan duct taped and with a hand guard are all you need. It looks silly, and marks you a newb, but it's very effective.

Seems right up your alley. Seriously.

Definitely!

Hmmm.. it is tempting, I'm not gonna lie!
It's not so much that it in and of itself is expensive though, I wasn't too clear on that - what I mean is that I'm already involved in several (too many??) other somewhat similar things and expenses can accumulate fast when all of that is factored in. God help me if I tried it and loved it, I'd then be buying the best stuff I could find, etc etc. It becomes an obsession..:help:
I current participate in groups that focus on WW1, WW2, and US Revolutionary war type events. Not to mention unrelated stuff like airsoft, this weekend I'm playing a for a few hours with some guys who came back from AFG not too long ago. they're going to kick my arse mercilessly but I'll love every second of it. :)
