Anyone else playing an All Tube Head through a Ported Cab?

Are you playing an all tube head through a ported cab?

I cut my bass teeth on ported cabs and tubes back when that’s what there mostly was. So that combination will probably always sound “right” to me.

Don’t know if you consider a Thiele shelf port as found in Ampeg’s later portaflex B-15 cab to be in the same category, but I use a B-15N.

I have used my SVT-CL with my HS410, like the sound, but the SVT really sounds best with my NV610

VB-2, I love this amp it is one of the best I've ever owned.
The only recordings I have are on my bands website but they are all taken direct from the heads DI and quite frankly our recording equipment is not so great. Here is a live video, of course you are hearing the PA but it captures the sound pretty well.

No, their not sealed.....their close to being sealed...more like a hybrid. Just check out the four10, six10, or eight10 on their website. It confused me when I looked. I didn't see the "resonator" detail in the specs.

Yeah, the NV series really does interest me. Some are saying the NV412 is just a tad better.
I'd have to try it out......but there is no where close to me that stocks either of these cabs.
Doubt I'd even see an HDN cab up here just yet......I had to play those when I went to Bass San Diego back in 2016.

The downside of small sealed cabs is that although they feel nice and tight in the lows, they tend to sound a bit thin unless you use a few 4x10"s at once or stack them with more bassy cabs - plus they don't handle that much bass power before distorting. The downside of the larger ported cabs is that they're rarely large enough, hence that somewhat boomy bass you get from many ported 4x10"s.

Our unique Hybrid Resonator Enclosure has the tight punchy feel of a sealed cab but with greater bass weight yet none of the boom of an undersized ported cab. The broadband resonant loading of the woofers reduces cone excursion and increases cab sensitivity, which together increases the maximum bass output by over 50%.

I'm really wondering with all the added efficiency of these Barefaced Cabs if anyone would really need the eight10 under any circumstance? Heck, I'd try it.....but it might end up being just as loud as my two Bergantino HD410's, just less boomy.

Hmmm......that sounds really interesting. I might check out this Fdeck HPF device. Is it like a filter of some kind? Like a bandpass filter?

Search for "HPF" AKA "High Pass Filter" here - lots of good info. Besides eliminating "floppy cone syndrome" they can tune out the "boom" AKA "mud" from the cab/room. Best $50 pedal ever :) .

I run a Fender Studio Bass 200w all tube monster through both sealed and ported cabs.

It just kills thru my Berg NV610 (older version, tolex but no tweeter) like you would expect a tube amp/sealed cab rig to do, but also sounds really great through my CN212.

The only thing I don't care for with the Studio Bass/CN212 is the t-bone visual effect of a big 'ol 26"w amp sitting on top of a fairly slender 18"w cab. Kind of stupid, but I just don't like that look at all. So, when I use that combination, I have taken to setting the CN212 on its side and tilting it up for an updated semi-'63 Bassman rig look.

I know it probably messes with dispersion or something, but I almost always have FOH support and good stage monitoring, so this rig is mostly for close monitoring for me and stage sound for the drummer.

I am about to add an fdeck Series 3 to my rig too. Looking forward to seeing what it can do for efficiency with various amps and cabs.
In particular I would love to discover that it might increase the utility of my beloved Walkabout thru a 4ohm CN212 and/or a 2ohm CN212 + CN112 stack.

Andy Lewis says a lot of stuff that makes no sense to me :D He once lectured me in a rather unpleasant way about not using cabs that go as low as his do because I'm doing my audiences a disservice.

Anyway, while on paper this damping factor stuff may be true, I've found it to not matter at all, with the possible exception of when you are slamming a cab within an inch of its life with volume.

I just wish the 4X10 came in a 4 ohm version. I'd own one already.

I've been using it mainly with a Streamliner 900 or a Rumble 200 Combo - it really shines in a room that tends to be boomy, and helps to get max results out of the Combo in particular... I'll bet it'll work great with your Walkabout - mine's set up like this:

so, the fdeck is the first thing in the signal chain after the wireless unit ?
