I'm talking about looking at or doing altogether different stuff. Reading things that are inspirational, making music, exercising, anything other than getting caught up in the news and headlines. I'm not religious but I have an excellent daily word type magazine I read from (or try to) every day. It has practical inspiring quotes and writings that I can really relate to, and I'd much rather have my mind stuffed with that kind of thing than what guy John Travolta is having sex with. The JT stuff is inescapable.
I'm sure some will call you all sorts of things (including "ignorant" and a lot worse) for this, but I think it's a very wise practice. You are what you eat, and that includes not only actual nutrients but also brain food. Do you want to spend your time worrying about things that other people are doing or might do? Some people do, and that may be the right choice for them, might make them feel connected to the world of other people in a way that feels necessary to them. Others, and I include myself in this group at this point, feel that it's more important to look first inside to find out how life should be lived. The balance of these things is all over the spectrum, with the fringes on either end being what most people would call excessive or even insane. We each have to find our own balance.
I personally watch very little news because it fills my head with information that keeps me from being happy and productive. 20 years ago, I decided to quit watching violent movies because I find them disturbing. Reality TV - most TV, in fact - strikes me as a complete waste of time, so I avoid it (I still like football and basketball for some reason, though, so I watch them). I like to play the bass, read books, train lightly (like the middle aged dad that I am) in a couple of martial arts, spend time with my family and friends, and try to live a life without cell phones, texts, tweets, and talking heads at a pace that seems reasonably sane. Life is too short to let too much noise from others disturb the peace.
All IMO and YMMV, of course - everyone has to find their own balance.
