For a few years I've been making my own balanced tension sets from SIT and D'addario nickel round wound strings (.040, .055, .080, .100, .130). But the B string often gets boomy around the 7th fret and the D and G strings sound thin.
I've been curious about Kalium for a while and last week I finally pulled the trigger on their 5 string hybrid (nickel/steel) balanced tension set .041 to .136. First of all, wow! These strings are really well balanced. All 5 of the strings sound great, the volume is equal across strings, the stiff feel of the low B is great, and they are super clear sounding. Great low mid punch too.
The only trouble is there's this really high end brightness/zing/fret clack that's hard to tame unless I turn my high EQ almost all the way down (BTW this is on a MM Bongo 5 HH). I had watched some online demos of the Kalium strings before, but they're mostly of metal/djent so I thought it was the guys' EQ and amp settings. I'm playing more mainstream rock.
I guess it could be that they just need time to break in, but I can't remember my other new strings being this bright (all my basses' strings are about a year old right now). I want to re-string my Sterling 5 HS for church this weekend and I have to decide if I should put SITs or Kaliums on it.
