Anyone gone from Sunbeams to Fat Beams?

Ah I appreciate the insight ... not sure if I’ve ever given the core of the string much thought.

I am used to Roto 77s in the 45 gauge and those are pretty burly.

I know I should try Rotosounds someday, but haven't yet.

Try the Low Beams, having your perspective Sunbeams > Low Beams alongside mine Sunbeams > Fat Beams would be cool.

I love the rotos on my fender P - either the 45s most of the time or 40s are great too for a little better intonation for chords & solos & such.

I find even the lighter Roto 40/130 set a little too heavy on the Skyline 5 string jazz bass. I’ve got DR legend flats on now and they’re great - just a little too short to go thru body - hence my inquiry.

The Pure Blues fit perfectly and had a great tension - I like the 45-125 gauges - I just got scared that the windings were a little too rough in the finger pads so I panicked lol.

I may order a set or or two of the other DR nickels to try and will force myself to leave them on a while and break them in. I have one upcoming pop gig but I’m planning to play the fender ... it’s one of those dueling piano / all request / on the fly dates so I figure I’d better keep it as simple as possible going in. Oh and it’s like a three hour set with no breaks and the 5 string is like a pound heavier than the 4 so there’s that ... good lord have mercy on my shoulder

In my opinion, Fat Beams do not have "heft" or "big" lows. What they do have, is a whole lot of mid range and just enough low mid and high mid----all with an airy quality; to keep it from feeling too middy. Fat Beams are like someone injected P-Bass sound into a string set. They are a lot different from most Stainless Strings. Even DR's other stainless offerings.

Old thread I know but I feel this way too. I think Hi-beams have more lows honestly. They have way too many mids for my taste (hi beams). Oddly, I do like sunbeams, they have a fair amount of mids too, but they are "better" mids to my ears.

Still have the Fat Beams on and am still happy with them, for what it's worth.
