I'm saving to make the switch too. meanwhile I've been using a safety razor that has already paid for itself in the cost per shave area. I find myself collecting shave soaps and creams that aren't in an aerosol can!

anyone here shave with a straight razor?

Yep. Closer shave, no razor burn, plus you feel like a badass when you use one. If cost is a problem,gett one if the models with disposable blades (yes they have those) they're like $50 on amazon for a whole kit
I shave with a DE razor and have wanted to try the straight for a while, just haven't had the courage to switch yet!
While chatting with my barber one day, I mentioned that I was thinking of trying my Grandfather's straight razor for shaving.

I've been shaving with a safety razor for quite a while, and I love it. Aside from days I don't have to do anything important, I've always been a daily shaver. My hair grows relatively fast and it comes in patchy. My chin is the only place on my face where I can work the edgy, metro 5 o'clock shadow and look good. Must be the Native American ancestery in me. Bottom-line, I need to shave on a regular basis to look decent.
On top of that, my hair is tough and dulls blades very quickly. I can render a Mach 3 cart useless in two shaves. So switching to a DE razor made a lot of economic sense (I don't go crazy with boutique soaps and creams like the people over at BadgerandBlade do, so I keep my shaving costs down).
With that said, I do own three safety razors. A Merkur 34c, a Merkur slant-bar, and a Muhle R41. The R41 is one of the most aggressive safety razors in production. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but when you do, you get some killer shaves from it. My two preferred blades are Feathers and Astras.
My father decided to go back to a safety razor last year, so he bought these cheap razors off of Ebay that were like $15 for three. They felt cheap in your hand and the shave felt like one of those single-blade disposables you can get from the dollar store that had been in steady use for 6 months. So for Christmas, I got him a Merkur adjustable and a box of Derby blades.
I've thought about trying a straight razor and I may one day; but right now, I don't want to deal with stroping and honing. I've thought about trying a shavette, but then they kind of defeats the economic benefits of using a traditional straight razor since I'm still changing blades.

does anybody know where I can get a straight razor that takes half a double edged razor blade? Catch being that I need a razor that protects from the razor edges/corners.

If you're in Queens, head over to Manhattan and hit up Pastuer's Pharmacy on 34th between Park Ave and 5th Ave. They have a pretty decent shaving selection and do have a few straights & shavettes.
I have a couple from my grandfather, and a nice Böker garnet honing stone.
I use the stone, but not the straight razor.
Glad I've got them, so I can be prepared 'comes the apocalyse' - but around here, I'd just blend in with the Amish, Mennonites, and Duck Commander wannabees...
