Anyone know if guitar center does these mods?

Hi! I have a bronco bass that I would like to mod with a bridge pickup. I want it to have the original pickup AND a j pickup on the bottom. This will require a new hole And probably a new preamp. Does anyone know if guitar center will do this and the price? Thanks!

Do not bring your bass to Guitar Center for anything, let alone having a hole routed in a bass.

You need to go to a real luthier.

GC will say they can do anything. But who knows who the "luthier" is working and making minimum wage? They don't even check the necks on the instruments that get put on the wall in most stores. As stated above, find a real professional. Perhaps start a thread giving your location, and ask for recommendations for local luthiers.

This is unrelated but I have an old Fullerton spin off for about $500. Do you think it would be better to keep it or trade it in for a bass like a jazz or mustang?

Guitar Center will send a sixteen year old who 'always really wanted to try using a router' to do the job. Find a competent repair man.

I'd rather be forced to run naked through a Guitar Center waving a dead cat by the tail than let anyone there touch one of my basses. But in all fairness, I'm kind of particular about stuff.

My GC has a mature, experienced, sensible repair technician who's been there for years. The few times I've used his services he's done exactly what I requested. He finished the jobs quickly and charged fairly. I'm confident he would direct me elsewhere if he felt unqualified to perform a particular service, as he did with me on one occasion.

If you live in Fort Collins, CO you can have the bass tech do the work for you. That is the only one I know of that I would allow to touch my bass. Otherwise, find an actual luthier to do the work (most music store jockeys can't do the job) and pay what it's worth. That will depend on your area and the competence of the luthier.

There’s probably exceptions but most the time asking a GC to route and install an extra pickup is the equivalent of taking your car to the local car wash for a custom paint job.

My local GC had an excellent tech.... For about 6 months, which seems to be the average turnover at GC. If you randomly hit that window of opportunity, it might work out...or not. Anybody with any skills quickly realizes it's a dead end job and moves on. It's essentially like asking a Wal-Mart employee to assemble your new lawnmower.

Since a Bronco is not an expensive bass, wouldn’t it be easier to find a bass with the proper configuration? The mod will probably cost you a lot of $ compared to the cost of the bass without adding value to your instrument. My 0.02$

Regardless of who does the work I am not sure pairing a jazz pickup with the stock bronco pickup would be a good match. I am pretty sure that is just a strat pickup of some kind. If you never plan on having them on at the same time it may be fine but otherwise I think it won't sound great.

I would only do that if you already knii oh w the tech really well ( and also know that he’s competent)

GC doesn’t train them like AT ALL. Their approach is to tell the customer “yes we can do that“ and then figure it out after they have your money.

My buddy is a really good tech, but they hired him from the sales side knowing NOTHING; he took it upon himself to do it in his free time because he wanted to.. but his backup guy over there SUCKS. He’s a sales turd who took the tech job for a raise and to say he does it. He regularly ruins people’s stuff
