oh.... but the use of the word photo makes me think it is fake like plastic laminate wood grain...

Huh, really? I thought it was somehow sprayed or printed on. Just a transparent layer over the real wood with just the "flame"? Or does it actually cover up the original grain and replace it with the image? I mean, you can see the real grain through it, right?That's what it is, that's why they cracked.
