Ah, ok. I've always thought the flame looked completely faked, though in an acceptable way, but that the wood underneath was real. Then again, my eyes started to go at 40, and that's a long time ago now.

I very strongly recommend you take some good sniffs of the bass, particularly the raw rosewood neck, as well as the case it was stored in while packed away in the cellar...

I bought a used P Bass that sat in a mildew-y basement for about 10 years, and it stunk of mildew... I couldn't do anything to rid the smell, and it really bothered me... Enough to distract me while playing. I didn't notice it when I bought it, but I just had to sell it, and for a decent loss.

Yeah, in that example, the entire grain is symmetrical, that looks fake. Maybe the SX "flame" finish was done differently, I thought that showed the real grain underneath.

I did nothing. At all. We ended making a trade for it now I have to decide what I wanna do with it. His cellar is finished it was actually in a bedroom he used it a few times so it been played. Just needs some strings action is pretty decent on it. He had it set up about a year ago.

Well, given the current images of "hamburglar" that Burger King is using, I understand why younger folks might not see the resemblance. :)

Yes - Fender photoflame. The neck is, well, let's just say too symmetrical; but the top actually has one of the nicer photoflame finishes. If it sounds as good or better than it looks, rock on!
