Yes, 44.5 is really long. I recently sold a rather old 7/8 German 43.25 that I'd owned and loved for 25 years. The thing about this bass was that the action was so soft and perfect that you didn't even notice the long string length during normal orchestral playing. Only in wide double-stops in Bach cello suites did I encounter problems. So, string length is only one of many factors when dealing with playability. You must also consider resale value. Still, 44.5 is extreme!
