Interesting, so you pluck the bass old school style with your thumb, and using the finger rest under the "g" string to kind of grab hold of?

Yup . Gives a very "dub" kind of sound. More thud than note when I palm mute . I like it.

Both of my P-Basses still have the original Thumb-rests on them. They never seemed to be in the way and I knew if I took them off I'd lose them!

Depending on the type of sound I am looking for I will use them and typically get a different sound then when I rest my thumb on either the pick-up or bridge. Seems a bit deeper.

I'd say the majority of the time I rest my thumb on the pick-ups.

I mostly rest my thumb on the pickups....but without pickups, I have my Mouse 30 with an "integrated thumbrest". It helps me play comfortably and looks pretty cool, IMHO.

I played a jazz bass a little while ago that had one fitted...I didn't dig it. It's not for me, though I do like the new school "ramps"!

Although on the Stingray I installed a little clear plastic doohickey on the pickguard where I like to anchor my thumb.

Floating thumb for me. I adopted this naturally when switching to five string.

For those who don't know, floating thumb means you don't need to anchor your thumb anywhere. Mine hangs straight down... I use it to mute the low strings when I'm riffing up high.

Not having to anchor my thumb means I have the freedom to play down by the bridge, right over the pickup, over the end of the neck... and anywhere in between. In short: it means a one-pickup bass is no longer a one-trick pony.

I tend to rest my thumb on the pickguard...it's not much, but it seems to work fine.

same here, I prefer to either rest it on the edge of the pickguard or the neck pickup on my jazz basses. I don't like the way the thumb rests feel when I strike the E string and my finger comes back and hits the thumb rest. It's basically just too big for my liking.

I've only had one bass with a tug bar (to use George Fullerton's term) and I could never figure out what it was for until several years after I removed it.

I've always rested my forearm on the edge of the body and let my fingers hang down.

yep I put one on my jazz, above the "E" string like from the 70's(I guess I'm a relic).I don't use it much only when I want a different tone, I usually use the neck pickup back corner to anchor.

I practicaly get up and stand on the top of my bridge pickup. So much so that I've worn a big divit in the wood there over the years.

Yeah I either rest it on the pickguard if it has one (my current main bass is a Spector, so no pickguard) or on my pick ups. Sometimes I'll actually rest it on the end of the neck if I'm playing close to it, and other times I'll rest it on the string above the one I'm playing. So I'm sorta all over the place with this one.

Yup. My first bass was an Epiphone Viola. I also rest on the pickups, but on the Epi, they are widely spaced ad I like the sound best when I play between the pickups, so I hade an ebony rest bade for be by Birdsong, and added it right between the pups.
I just got a Dean EVO and I plan on doing the same thing, but I am going to have to get another rest made, because there is not enough space between the pups for a standard "fender style" thumbrest... I just like using the thumb rest, gives my two fingers a little more speed.... I like having the different options on where to play for the different sonic possibilities...
