Anyone Use a Sample track?

Most professional bands that I know of use sample tracks to add stuff like piano, or orchestra string parts and extra vocal harmonies instead of having a whole orchestra come to gigs with them. I just have a few questions about them, like how the drummer stays in time with the tracks and how they time stuff like breaks for inturment changes in the set. Does anybody know anything about these, or use a sample track?

What I've done, and this may not be the norm, but it's like this.

When we play live, most stuff is in mono. So I've recorded the parts with a click on one side, and the part on the other. Then only send the part to the mains and the click to the monitors.

I haven't used a lot of samples for instruments though. Normally if a song has a weird intro like a sound effect, I record it onto my Roland VS and play the sample before the song starts. It can get tricky as far as timing it, but when it works it's cool.
