Curious to hear your thoughts about this bass. Do you like the neck better than a Modulus maybe or are they about the same ? Build quality ? over all performance ? Thanks
i can only speak on the fivers (don't own a four or six string). imo, the necks on the gould's are pretty much the same as the modulus q5's with the slight difference being that the gould's are a few millimeters wider (q5's are 2.75" at the 24th fret; ggi5's are 3" at the 24th fret). so q5's can do 17mm-17.5mm spacing at the bridge and ggi5's can do 17.5mm-18mm spacing at the bridge.

can't really go wrong with either.

Well, Pnutz has me beat by a bunch but I do have two Gould basses and a Modulus.

I just got the ggi5 recently and have not completed setting it up to my liking so I will comment on the ggi6 and the Quantum 6.

The ggi6 has Geoff's tweaked EMG electronics in it. It has great clarity but is warmer sounding than most EMG electronics. The Quantum has Bartolini Electronics and has the typical warm...less edgy tone...perhaps a little compressed sounding....well, it sounds like Batrolini electronics. LOL

The neck on the Modulus is a bit more narrow and the string spacing is a little tighter than the Gould. The Gould neck is a bit more thin front to back. Both basses feel great and play wonderfully and I am quite comfortable on both of them. The Gould weighs less than 9 pounds...really, it does..and the Modulus is on the sunny side of 10 pounds. Both have alder bodies with figured maple tops.

The truss rod on the Gould was very stiff to adjust. I really had to lean in to it to get the neck almost flat. The Modulus, on the other hand, has the easiest to turn and most effective truss rod I have ever seen. It need to be tightened slightly when I got the bass and I was astonished at how easy it was to turn and how effective it is.

I have heard some stories about Modulus basses with truss rods and wood fingerboards having problems of the fingerboard joint coming loose. I will say though that I have in the past owned a 5 and a 6 string Quantum that had wood fingerboards and a truss rod and had no problems. I have heard of no such problems with the Gould basses.

I love them both and neither is going anywhere.

Geoff is very helpful and a great guy to deal with if you should need him. One of my friends owns several Modulus basses and says the guy who owns the company now is also very helpful.

Which do you think has a better low B ?

I bet Jerry Dorsch at least still makes Geoff's necks. I think Joe Perman makes the Mods in house, but I could be wrong.

Can (or will) anyone confirm the Dorsch connection w/ G.Gould instruments?
I know for a fact that Joe Perman is indeed making the current Modulus necks, although to say "in house" might be slightly disingenuous, as Modulus headquarters is in Maple Grove, MN and Joe's shop is in Stockton, CA.

imo, the play/action on the 'b' string are the same. i did recently pick up a q5 with a kahler bridge but it's out being refin'd and properly set up. have always been curious if the kahler's individual saddle layout:

might produce a better 'b' on a 35" scale bass. will update accordingly.

the bodies are from modulus quantum 5's. i like the balance of the modulus bodies combined with the gould maple neck. yeah, a little blasphemous but, hey, didn't stop dr. frankenstein... :)

Best of both worlds.. can’t hate on that. I have always liked (and wanted) the Q5 body shape better than the gg. I have yet to even play either… never see them around. Sure hope to get my hands on one some day! Until then.. It’s my Warwicks.
