Anyone using a power amp with a Shuttle? (Shuttle as a pre?)

@tallboybass: I thought about using the DI...balanced and perfect...I could even take it POST-eq. But then I'd lose the ability to DI into the board....didn't want to lose that.

@agedhorse: Wow. I'm shocked and really disappointed that I received bad info from QSC! :scowl: I mean, they really should know these things! The transformer the guy recommended is totally the wrong tool and would completely kill my tone! WTH? Thanks very, very much for setting me straight. Oh well. Now I've got two shiny matching transformers for my PA. :hmm:

You've got PM on the way, Sir.

When I emailed QSC asking if using an unbalanced connection would work, here's the (detailed and professional :)) reply I received. I really love QSC's customer service!

He then linked me to the transformer I showed, above.

I just ordered a couple from MCM; they're nice to have around anyway for the PA. I'll try it both ways just for grins. My biggest worry is that the transformer will change the tone. We'll see what Agedhorse has to say. :)

The response is incorrect and inaccurate. The linked transformer will not work correctly.

The 6dB difference between balanced and unbalanced is not an issue, the Shuttle has plenty of drive voltage available.

Note that the limit light and output tube emulation limiter are not part of the preamp out signal path, they remain connected with the internal amp which still operates. Due to the different amp sensitivities, it's likely that the limit light will flash strongly thougjh this will not affect the preamp output. If you don't want the LED flashing, just insert a dummy 1/4" plug into the effects return and this will break the signal path to the internal amp.

They won't just kill your tone, you won't get anywhere near the proper volume either. You will get maybe 1/8 maximum power. Not good (of course).

This is the kind of problems I deal with and solve every day, it gets easy to spot the bad info after doing this for 30 years. Just trying to save you from some grief that's no fault of your own.

See if you can cancel the order. A proper direct box would be a better choice for the PA, the LF response and saturation levels are generally much better and they come with a ground lift switch which is more or less essential IMO.

Ah, I'll just keep the order for the two transformers. It's just a few bucks and I can probably use them with some of the cheap mics I have. :) Another tool for my PA tool box (patch cords/adapters/etc).

Thanks for the education and saving me a lot of wasted time, Agedhorse. You have a PM.

Mike

Thanks Mike, the confusion is being resolved as we post. This is the second time I've dealt with this kind of mis-understanding about level-impedance interfaces, the first one involved a fairly irate customer who assumed that his Shuttle(Max?) was to blame and after an hour of troubleshooting got it sorted out and resolved. He had already bought the transformer and went down that road. I hope to help you guys avoid this yourselves.

It should be noted that QSC generally has some of the best tech support and customer service in the amp industry, the guys I deal with there have been nothing short of outstanding. I'm sure this was a mis-understanding where the support guy did not understand the question or misinterpreted the situation. I do NOT wantto give the impression that QSC support is bad.

I'm glad you're setting them straight. I was very clear in my email to them and gave a detailed explanation of what I wanted to do. I even referenced the user manual/page/section to show them that I RTFM. Maybe that tech was having a confusing week or something? Disaster averted; that's the important thing, right? And love for the TB community, of course! :D

It's in the interest of getting you (and other folks who may happen onto this thread) an accurate answer and for you to be successful at making this work.

I would way rather spend time sorting this out in advance and getting you up and running rather than dealing with a "failure thread". ;)
