Tuner, compressor then “blank” into combo amp?

So I have a Nano board I “need” to fill. I have a Sonic Research tuner, I think I’m going to try a Walrus Highpoint compressor, and I have space for something else. I’ll use this board with my Genzler MG350 113 combo for jazz gigs, pits, etc. Passive P, J and active 5’s.

Thoughts?

If you're playing multiple basses on a single gig, how about a mini-mixer so you can equalize their levels at the start of the signal chain, and/or switch them in and out so you don't have to go through the rigamarole of plugging and unplugging.

If you're not then... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Put something nice there you can look at when you need a distraction? A little sculpture, stuffed animal, TV screen...

Chorus or Reverb might slot in there nicely. There are plenty of good chorus options out there, but JAM pedals Waterfall, or Ripley Falls if you can find one, comes to mind.

Before switching to a Helix with DB IRs, I used a TC Hall of Fame Reverb to help simulate an acoustic tone on a small EUB board. There are a lot of options packed into that pedal. It’s just sitting in the box now though.

That thought crossed my mind. I use an HX Stomp for my DI/IEM cover band gigs. The stuff I do with an amp doesn’t usually require much in the way of effects. An HX One would, of course, cover a lot of ground

Chorus was a thought as well. Can give that “fretless” vibe and chorus seems to be making a bit of a comeback from the 80’s.

IMHO: Why do you need to fill the hole? Leave it until you are inspired.

You may eventually fill the hole and want something else. There is no reason to rush it.

I’d second the HX ONE suggestion. It also has the Sansamp model so you can get Ampeg-ish tone just from the board

I agree with @Wasnex. Wait until a definite need arises, otherwise you are filling a hole with something you don't really need. I have a chorus and don't use it, because it sucks tone. I have a distortion/octaver but don't use it because it sounds crazy, over the top, and I play jazz, don't need it. Compressor on the other hand is always useful.

Something you might wanna consider is a preamp pedal. Yes, I know your Genz amp has a built-in preamp, but adding a different preamp pedal in front of your amp's input (or into the effects return jack thereby bypassing the amp's internal preamp) can provide you with a completely different tone if you so choose. I know this to be a fact because many years ago, I had a Markbass combo amp (all solid state) and just for fun one day I decided to hook up an Ampeg SCR-DI in front of the Markbass input, and wow, what a MASSIVE improvement in tone! It was like having a completely different amp!

I could leave it open, but that’s not a very “Talk Bass” response.

I’m probably going to put a Genzler Magellan Preamp/DI after my HX Stomp on my board I use for my DI/IEM cover band gigs. I like the sound of my Genzler combo amp so that’s my logic there.

I am curious about the Mantle and thought about that instead of the Genzler, but the Genzler seems to have more options and is 1/2 the price. I would guess the Highpoint and Mantle would be a great combo.

I only play with my amp (so small board) maybe a handful of times a year so I hate to spend too much.

I like the sound from my Genzler combo so that’s why I am leaning that way for the cover band and I’m not sure about a 2nd preamp. I get the idea. Just have to sit on it a while.

The tone I need/use for this rig would be mostly clean and full. That’s why a compressor is there. Not sure I would ever use an “Ampeg” sort of tone (like with the HX One but I guess you never know.

I like the idea of something I can tweak on the fly. Which is why I’m leaning to the Genzler for my cover band board with the Stomp. Just quicker and easier to make a quick change with knobs right there.

For this one, I can tweak right on the amp which is why a 2nd preamp hadn’t crossed my mind. And if I went that way, I’d go knobs instead of an HX One.

Or as was suggested by a wise person, Leave it empty and see what happens. Also the cheapest.

Why not an EQ pedal to have flexibility in shaping your tone for individual stages, studios, songs, etc.?

Well, I’m using this board with a combo amp that has eq. A 2nd preamp or eq has been mentioned. Genzler actually makes a nice eq pedal but that seems a little redundant. Genzler r/eq pedal into a Genzler amp? Although the eq points are different on each. And Nate Navarro does it on the Genzler demo videos.
