Anyone using a Projection screen during performances?

I had a brain fart this morning about using a digital screen projector in the background to screen images during performances. Band logos, Images pertaining to a particular song, Lyrics. Band photos. Anyone doing or has tried something similar?

Yes, I was in a band that did this and @RoadRanger & @s0c9 are correct. Unless you have real pro level projection gear and the space to properly set it up, it's a real mixed bag of results. Generally, you need to have unblocked space to project the images/video. Front projection means that the ceiling has to be high enough to clear everyone's head that might get in the way. Rear projection means that you need to have enough back space to project, and enough width in the stage area, on or off stage, to allow for a sizeable enough image for it to be worth the effort.

The best bet is to use this at clubs that are already equipped with a pro video projection system, and have already done the heavy lifting that makes it look worthy, and if the venue has gone to that length to feature quality video projection, chances are they are a "premium" venue... For example:

It's hard to get these kind of results at the local bucket of blood bar, but that's not to say it can't be done, or it has no usefulness. It just tends to be a logistical pain in the arse. As the following pix demonstrate, do make for a measure of interest, but sort of meh....such as:

Yes we use a round one on each side of the stage ran by our light guy from a laptop. It can be seen in this picture just behind my right shoulder. Rather easy to do and the small screens take up little space.

If you're going small a couple LCD TV's works OK.

If you really like the idea of projection but are not married to the idea of a screen you could always experiment with projection mapping on different surfaces. Not my video but a great place to start: .

The advantage here being that you can still include an awesome video element without needing a full 12'-18' of unobstructed throw space. Pair with a banner and some lights and you have a really interesting stage setup!
