Anyone using a step sequencer or arpeggiator?

If so, which one?

I'm looking at the EHX 8 Step to go with a Flint, or the SA Stingray has a step feature that sounds pretty nice...although that pedal is not really designed for bass. A while back I had a ZVex Seek Wah that worked great on guitar.

I can't do the scrolling through menus thing, so the H9 is out of the question. The Earthquaker Arpanoid looks cool, but there doesn't seem to be much control over the sequence.

What else is worth a look?

I used an 8-step program and a line6 m9 on this track:

The effect starts at 0:47: you can hear the rather subby dry signal played in half notes blended with a distorted and pitch-modulated wet signal in eights. I really love this effect.
There is another track where I use the 8-step to modulate the speed of a filter cutoff modulation. It's not online but its another example how awesome it is to use the 8-step together with a good multi-effect. Much more usable than the arpanoid, because only pitch modulation is a very special effect you can't use too often and the arpanoid doesn't have tap tempo.

That sounds great. What program did you use for the 8 step?

I use the Adrenalinn3 for that. MIDI-synched step sequencer that drives it's arp, filter sequences and internal drum machine. That being said, as much I love the pedal (I really really love this pedal), it is most certainly not the friendliest when it comes to programming, and kind of sucks if you are a live tweaking on stage kind of person. It sounds magical however, and plays very nicely with the bass.

Yes, he did indeed!
Hard to say, though. You need to set the depth of the 8 step to the value 3. The m9 is highly interactive with expression pedals, so there's a bit of knob fiddling for the rest and it all depends on how you set min and max values on the line6. Basically its just a straight forward 8 step sequence modulating a pitch shifter through different fifths and octaves with a distortion before and a phaser after.

Yup...for some reason I read it as using some sort of software program...not the EHX 8 Step Program. My only issue with that pedal is it only connects to 1/4" expression pedal jacks, which rules out using it with most of my pedals that have expression capabilities.

Ha!

You do want to be careful what you connect to the Control Voltage (CV) out of the 8 step. You cannot plug all expression jack into it. You MUST be certain that the expression jack can receive CV, and the voltage range it works with. Some pedals like EHX only take 1V, some take 3.3V (Eventide) and some 5V+. The 8 step can be adjusted for this, so it only outputs a maximum. But always ask the builder if the EXP port can accept CV or you risk frying your pedal.

That's one of the best, most interesting pieces of music I have heard in a very long while! Great stuff!

I don't want to hijack the thread, but there are just so many kind words in this post:
I checked out some of your other stuff on your YouTube channel and it's all fantastic!
There's even more on bandcamp if you like it: Psychedelic Orchestra

You have a great sound -even before the effects are added! I haven't ever heard a Jazz bass sound so fat and full!
Thick La Bella flats and the pickups wired in series can take you a long way... ;-)

I hope you guys are getting a LOT of interest and gigs because if you're not, you really SHOULD be!
Well, I hope you already sent a link to all of your friends and their mothers! ;-)

-I will be sure to check it out. Instrumental music is the real 'test' for me, musically. There are so many bands that play 'instrumentals' but VERY FEW that can hold my attention and keep me listening to the point that I don't even realise I have been listening for 5 minutes or more without noticing there are no vocals! Timeless, sonic journeys are what you guys are creating!

-Ahah! So that's the secret! Now I'm wishing I hadn't just sold a pair of Jazz basses because they weren't as fat as my Precisions!

Well, I hope you already sent a link to all of your friends and their mothers! ;-)
-I'm on to it! ;)
