Double Bass Anyone using DYN-B? any luck with it?..

Ive got a DYN-B which seems to be either the best pickup ive ever had or the worst depending on gigs/rooms/situations..

I get thew most luck using my Headway preamp and blending in a bit of the Realist pickup.

Does anybody else use the DYN-B and what do you think of it? Ive got a real love/hate thimg going on and wondering if i should trade it in for a mic...

since then i've tried it on gigs by itself and blended with a full circle and i think it does better (for my sitch) with a piezo to fill out the bottom end. the full circle did this well. i'm looking forward to trying other piezos, too.

for the clarity and 'real tone' of the bass through the range of the bass, though, the dyn-b is very mic-like. i was at a gig recently where, using the dyn-b alone, i could only get medium volume, but i've had it pretty loud too, and it still made the most of my rig given the situation.

i love it blended!

I used to have one. I have recorded direct with it before with quite favorable results. Its a good pickup if you have a good sounding bass. It doesn't work well on every instrument. I only use the Full Circle now.

ive definately noticed the difference of my DYN-B when it moved from my cheap bass to a much better instrument. but that would probably be the case with most pickups? it seems the longer i have the DYN-B and use it in different situations, the more i get to know it and how to EQ it to get the most out of it. It does seem to work very well with a bit of the Realist blended in. I did miss the bottom end 'presence' when i just used the dyn-b. im really curious about the A-DYN though and wonder how that is. i havent heard a single thing about it..

I just sold one. I really don't like it. I think it's an updated DeArmond.(conceptually) It's not even a condenser. I think that for that type of pickup within the limits of it's dynamic range (that being low to medium volume) that Toby Timber's new pickup is WAYYYY better. I guess that it just bugs me that Schertler charges that much dough for a dynamic contact mic.

I used a DYN b for a while, and found it to be very inconsistent. Placement on the bass was hard to recreate, the room made a big difference, and it didn't work very well with most amps. The best sound I heard from it was with the DYN b right on top of the soundpost, with a Roland KC 500 keyboard amp, no external preamp. Second was with an acoustic string band, everyone going into a PA system. That worked very well. In my experience, the typical small bass amp gigging situation isn't compatible with that pickup.

I think that is the point.

The Dyn B is not designed for small bass amps.

I've been using it going on 10 years and it works very well when used as DESIGNED.

Best: Through a good PA, with the Schertler Pre Amp to notch the bad freq.

Good: Through a very neutral amp and the Schertler Pre Amp

Decent but lacking volume and clarity: Through a neutral amp or PA with no preamp

Poor: Through a bass amp.

Works well for me. Currently either through the Bose PAS system or my Markbass CMD121p and the preamp.
