Double Bass Aparent volume differences between solid and ply (newbie question)

IMO, also, transcribing is highly over rated around here.

I mean this with all respect because I'm still a ****** player on his way up, do you not think it's useful to tlisten to great bass players and learn their lines? I've struggled a bit with it myself because I'd rather just play down the tunes; but that is pretty much the one thing EVERYONE tells me when I say I want to learn to make more interesting lines.
 
Do whatever it takes. I'm not against transcribing at all, I just think it's over rated. You can listen and learn anything without writing it down, no? I can and so can many players...past and present. I don't have the musical tools to transcribe. I HAVE to rely on my ears.
