Almost two weeks ago, a guest Music Minister recorded these bass lines to play for this Sunday's service. Saturday, the 28th, we had a rehearsal, and he was happy with my rendition of those bass parts. That said, I could see where I could some improve some parts, and I did after I finished binge watching Stranger Things with my youngest daughter. I am very happy with where I am as a bassist. For years, I was more focused on showing off my chops (honestly my chops have always been modest,) instead of simply getting my part right. These days, I am just as proud of properly playing whole notes at a slow tempo as I am of playing a fast sixteenth note passage at 130bpm. I have finally figured out what the greats learn early on.
The most impressive thing any bassist can do is to perfectly execute the right part. That is what keeps a bassist working.
