Lovin't the Ron Smith. Any sound samples?Some other examples: Harry Jansen (31.5" scale), Stefan Sonntag (30.7"), Ron Smith (34"), Vinnie Colletti (34").
Contact Andrew Drake at Drake Custom Bass. He has carving skills and might give it a go. It won't be cheap, but it will comparatively affordable.
Ibanez AFB200. Good sounding and very affordable. I played one for several years.

I finished building this one a month or so ago. 20" lower bout, 36" scale. I think the reason there are not a lot being built is very simple, sound volume in decibels is directly related to body volume in cubic inches. This bass sounds great and has far more volume and bass than any flat top acoustic I've ever played. It can keep up with an acoustic guitar or two, but even at 20" it just can't compete with a double bass, and due to it's large size it's really not much more portable than a bass guitar and battery powered amp. I wish it was, I'd love to sell a few.

The 27 frets is a nice touch, too.
The 27 frets was to extend the fingerboard far enough to use as a thumb-rest where the best tone was. When I make a recording I'll post it. I really need to get together with a guitar player to show how it sounds with in a group setting. Without that I don't think it means much. Tone is not the hard part, volume is.
