are 5-strings necks really huge?

No, I think he's just saying that often times tabs can sometimes make a person inflexible as to how something is played. Personally, with notation, I can choose whichever shape I find comfortable/sounds best , the notes are still the same. With tabs, unless you know your way around the neck, you'll stick to whats given.

Go watch some young bands -- where the bass player is in his or her 20s -- and my bet is you'll see a ton of hopping all over the neck on the same two strings. I consistently see kids playing on only the E and A strings. I don't know if it's tabs or just that they sit down and work out the songs before they know where all the notes are on the bass. Back when I learned, my Fender had a dead C on the G string and I consistently played that note on the D. It became such a habit that after I got a bass that didn't have dead C, I STILL played on the d string. I'm over that now.

cut the kid some slack... looks like he hasnt been playing very long. Im sure all of you wernt using 2-3 fingers on plucking and all 4 on fretting when you first began, no?? Neither did I.

Judging by the looks and price of that bass, as well as how old he is, I wouldnt be suprised if that was his dads axe.

Jeeze, that little bugger is like 8 years old. Cut him some slack. I'm sure if he's hot his head screwed on the right way, he'll really LEARN to play well...

Hey, I'm just offering up some advice for the youngster. He's at that age where he can either learn to be a great player or learn a bunch of bad habits that will hinder his efforts in his high school years. The sooner the better IMO.
