If you have to look beyond what is given (ie - a piece of music) to 'understand' or 'appreciate' it, it's a lesser work as far as I'm concerned. To presume that something that cannot speak for itself (in my opinion) is more 'advanced' than another type of music is not something I agree with.

That's the thing though, this thread is built off stereotypes, the assumption that every abstract art fan thinks they've got the whole thing figured out. I like abstract art, and I LOVE abstract music: Do I think that makes me better than anyone? No. Do I think the things I enjoy hold more depth than anything else? No.
You just need to get the stereotype out of your mind that all abstract art fans are, well...
