Are abstract art fans stupid?

If you have to look beyond what is given (ie - a piece of music) to 'understand' or 'appreciate' it, it's a lesser work as far as I'm concerned. To presume that something that cannot speak for itself (in my opinion) is more 'advanced' than another type of music is not something I agree with.

That and I'm a ****.

That's the thing though, this thread is built off stereotypes, the assumption that every abstract art fan thinks they've got the whole thing figured out. I like abstract art, and I LOVE abstract music: Do I think that makes me better than anyone? No. Do I think the things I enjoy hold more depth than anything else? No.

You just need to get the stereotype out of your mind that all abstract art fans are, well...

I wouldn't say they are stupid, but i fail to appreciate why some folk appreciate Abstract Art. Each to their own i guess. In my mind, it's not art.

It must be. You just called it abstract art.

Saying abstract art isn't art because you don't like it is like saying soda isn't a beverage because you don't like how it tastes.

I was using the term given to it in this thread.

I didn't say it isn't art. I said "in my mind, it isn't art".

Good point Matt. I enjoy abstract art and avante garde music because I ACTUALLY ENJOY IT. Not so I can feel superior to everybody else.

One of my assignments in an artclass in college was to take pencil and paper and let my emotions out on the page. My friend Mike and I played tic tac toe a couple of times and then I scribbled over it until you could not see the tic tac toe games. I got a B+.

Well...if we don't like something, that doesn't change the fact that it is art. We subjectively see or hear a piece, and we either like it or we don't. We may qualify it as "bad" art. But, sucky or sublime, its still art.

Yes, even that stupid canvas painted all white. (I think that is *lazy* art! )

When the great statue, "David" was shown in Dallas/Ft. Worth, some public schools refused to allow field trips to the museum to see it. David's male equipment is on full display. Some people found this to be offensive. They said it was porn, not art.

But we all know this statue to be art, and high art, at that. Like it or not, find it offensive or beautiful, it is art.

As are Pollack's paintings, which I just utterly loathe, because I find them ugly. They are art. I wouldn't use them to paper my bathroom walls, but they are art.

You see, here is a criticism I can live with. Cherie explained specifically what she dosen't like about Pollock without dismissing and entire style or group of artists or calling fans of Pollock pretentious or mentally insane. That's all I ask!

I love looking at art. I love going down to the museum by myself and just standing there, looking at everything. No one to tell me what I should be getting from the work. No "expert" giving a tour, or explaining what the artist meant. Just go in, during the slow, middle of the day, and drink it all in. No preconceptions. This is my favorite way to enjoy art, because the lines between styles and eras and genres blur. You just dig what you see and feel, or you don't, and then you can move on to something else you do dig.

Its very relaxing, and inspiring. I haven't gone in months, because of taking care of Mom. I should get on a bus soon and go, again!
