Are abstract art fans stupid?

Because I do not consider avant garde music to actually be music.
There are many things I do not enjoy or understand that I don't dismiss completely. When confronted with the "high art" elite it's easier to tell them to take a running jump then engage. Especially when they are only (seemingly) interested in flaunting their knowledge.
Because avant garde music is a waste of time. People who enjoy it have problems as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they think the same of me, that's cool.
Better is subjective. I might like it, or get more from it, my baby brother might not. On the other hand there are many "great" books I like a whole lot less than Spot.
I'm mostly in agreement with you. I just cannot stand elitist sentiments that dismiss rather than engage, personally.
You are stating opinions as fact. Care to explain why you think this way rather than toss off flippant statements?
I think it's more like you excluding yourself from the engagement than anyone seeing to dismiss you, really.

I have never heard anything described as avant garde that I would describe as music.
well its a hell of a lot better than this so called painting they called art. It wasnt even a painting. someone just painted a canvas white, (no joke just a 2x2 white canvas) is it just me or is that so stupid, the thing sold for $20,000 too....

I think, you like what you like. I just despise Pollack. His work always seems very cold and sterile to me, and like he just threw paint around.
But, you know, there's this guy down on South Congress who paints plates. Any old plate, any shape. He applies layers of paint, patterns of paint, and fires each layer with a torch. This changes the texture, or the color, or both, of the paint. He's fascinating to watch, and his work is very appealing.
Why is he different from Pollack? I don't know. Maybe because no one ever says anything pretentious about the dude on South Congress, and I got one of his plates for $10? LOL!

Taste is truly subjective. This piece looks to me like something a bored 6th grader might create.
Just thought of another local abstract guy I like. He does acrylic and air brush on metal sheeting, and fires it. He creates strange, alien-looking landscapes and odd shapes using this technique. I love it! Its street art, but that's my favorite kind. I always find something I love among the street artists, more than anything I ever see in a gallery.
I seem to have a thing for artists who use fire to change the quality of their work.
They're certainly cool to watch!

Could you get a little more specific? Composers or pieces that you heard? What specifically excludes it from being "real" music?
Why do avant garde fans "have problems?" Why can't you just not like avant garde related art/music... why do fans of it have to "have problems?"
This thread is a joke. If you enjoy abstract art and the concepts behind it, that's great. If you don't, well... you don't.
I, for one, love abstract art. The concepts behind why it was created are oftentimes what get me. Even if it is simply fun to look at, I consider it good art. Craftsmanship has nothing to do with it. Big deal if anyone with a paintbrush has the ability to create it. It still excites a visceral emotion within me.
As for those of you who don't enjoy it, go on doing so. You won't hurt my feelings. But to call these artists untalented and their works worthless is arrogant and rude on your part.

I think you should tell him face to face...no weapons, as god intended. His way is not very sportsmanlike.
I've heard much of John Cage's work, as well as his dance collaborations with Merve (forget the last name sorry!).
Beyond that it's hazy, you could call Buckethead avant garde (I wouldn't - I enjoy his work), similarly Shawn lane could be avant garde - I wouldn't call him so.
To me what makes avant-garde a stand alone genre is the pretense and driving ideas behind it. Some enjoy that, I don't.
If you have to look beyond what is given (ie - a piece of music) to 'understand' or 'appreciate' it, it's a lesser work as far as I'm concerned. To presume that something that cannot speak for itself (in my opinion) is more 'advanced' than another type of music is not something I agree with.

You see, here is a criticism I can live with. Cherie explained specifically what she dosen't like about Pollock without dismissing and entire style or group of artists or calling fans of Pollock pretentious or mentally insane. That's all I ask!
