Are bass ukuleles "legit"?

Played several at a music store... may as well have rubber bands on a cigar box.
They make a unique thump, but they are not for me. In my opinion, nothing beats a solid body electric bass.
If you're considering going to school for jazz with a bass uke, I'm sorry, but I think you'll get laughed out of the rehearsal hall. Electric bass, which has been mainstream in jazz since Monk Montgomery's day, is still not always welcome in jazz circles. A Kala won't fare better. It's not always about the sound, but the look as well. My two cents.
I have been playing my Hadean bass for two and a half years. I sold my Hofner after one year. Needless to say I love it. Weighs only two pounds, no calluses needed. Only cost $159.

don't know - haven't used them, and my ubass didn't have a truss rod. it would be interesting to know.

Depends on the player, doesn't it? I'd have no use for one, but then I also own a couple of great acoustic bass guitars that'll blow away any U-bass. But others like them for the novelty, the stage appearance, and surprisingly for their amplified tone. Are they legit? Sure. Are they everyone's cup-o-tea? Hardly.
A friend of mine who plays bass was looking for an acoustic sound. I suggested a U bass. He said “I don't ant to look look like Tiny Tim.” He ended up buying a Luna AE bass that sounded like crap to me.

Anything that can make a sound and works for the song is legit.
If it served the music that would be legit too. We have a few cigar box players around here. For about a year I gigged an electric upright I made using a large cigar box and another EUB I made using a small washtub.
Yesterday someone played a gig with one at the venue I work at as a sound person. Sounded fine.
Can rubber bands on a cigar box get the nice amplified tone that the u-basses get?
The first time I picked up one of the Kalas I thought the fat rubbery strings felt bizarre under my fingers, but then the salesman plugged it into an amp, and...it just works.
