Double Bass The Truth About John Coltrane

Trance was/is a monster. Some of his work is awesome some is not so.. Every piece of music an artist writes or performs is not going to appeal to all of us. Not sure how you could describe his tone as shrill though. IMO his sound is great.

Here is a joke I composed and posted on TB in 2016 - It was met at that time with deafening indifference, but I always liked it:

John Coltrane, Sarah Jessica Parker, and a Horse walk into a bar:
The bartender says to the Horse and to Sarah Jessica Parker - "Hey, you two - why the long faces?".
The bartender then says to J.C. - "And you - why the long solos?".

C'mon...it's funny, right?

I love jazz, but don’t play it. So I am not really an aficionado. Without a ton of context, I find the Coltrane album I am most familiar with, Giant Steps, very compelling.

Is it easy listening? No, it is difficult listening. But I just feel Coltrane expressing a raw emotional charge in his playing, an urgency, both searching and preaching. The whole band’s playing is excellent.

I really dig it. My wife sometimes makes me turn it off while we are in the car.

Hey I like it too! First album from Trane that I bought. Actually, reading this thread made me want to listen to it.
