Are bassists heavier?

Is your bassist (i.e. you) heavier than the average weight of the rest of the band?

Paul McCartney said in an interview that he got "lumbered" with playing the bass and didn't like it because the bass player was always the fat guy standing in the corner.
I don't know if this is universally true, but I'm doing my part to uphold this tradition.

I have about 20 pounds of excess beer on my frame. But, I'm still the lightest male person I regularly with. If I got rid of that 20 pounds of beer, I would still be heavier than all of the female people I play regularly with. So, what that means is that I need to play music with women only. Then I can be the heaviest person in the band.

You may be onto something...

I said about the same, only because my band are quite large lumberjacks.

Like others, I took up bass because my hands just suited better to a bass than a guitar.

In regards to the question, I would say we are generally bigger because we concentrate more on our playing than our image.

I'm 5'10" and weigh 195 pounds but have a 32 inch waist. I have large thighs from years of playing ice hockey so there is a lot of muscle there and I am in the best physical shape of everyone in the band. Most people assume I weigh around 165 to 170. My drummer is about 6' and weighs around 280, the keyboard player is 5'10" and weighs about 250, guitar player is 5'11" and weighs about 225, second guitarist is 5'6" and weighs about 140, lead singer is around 5'11" and weighs about 165.

I've always been one of the bigger guys around, whether it's playing music, sports, or whatever. I'm 6'5" and currently 238lbs. Now, once upon a time (when I wrestled in college), I was up to a pretty solid and muscular 265-270lbs. And, I was blessed with good athleticism and genetics, so my size never really kept me from doing what I wanted. I've been practicing martial arts for years, and simple physics just don't let me explode as quick as some of the other guys on the mat I train with. But, I do think my big hands and really long fingers does help when it comes to playing. The downside is, everybody always looked at me to carry the heavy stuff. But, they've cut me some slack since my back surgery, thank goodness.:smug:
